just goes to show no matter who you are you can be affected by
this disease....Gets me sometimes when I read or hear folks
say..."but he comes from a really good family...blah blah blah..."
Race, gender or economic standing has nothing to do with addiction...
period.

Reminds me how very powerful this disease is.

Mel has been in recovery for about 15 years, I believe (his own admission) and my prayers go out that he can get back on a better path soon.

hugs

cunning, baffling and powerful - this disease of alcoholism . . .

I don't like to waste my energy on hate - but I could really hate the disease of alcoholism/addiction.

This quote is from today's Variety. It's what I thought when I read about this incident over the weekend, too - I hope I'm wrong, but I predict the majority of attention will go to the despicable remarks he made, not the drinking that got him arrested. As a society, we have a long way to go in understanding this cunning disease.

"It's difficult to imagine that so many in the entertainment industry would be asking so many questions about Gibson's future had he only been arrested for drunken driving. Hollywood has a forgiving record when it comes to bad behavior off the set."

5:00PM Central Time - As seen on MSNBC

"Mel Gibson's publicist confirms he has gone to alcohol rehab clinic...."
"BAC level was .12 percent....."

As I've said before, alcoholism is an equal opportunity destroyer. With that period of sobriety under his belt, makes me wonder what triggered it. But regardless, it is the "baffling, cunning, powerful" nature of the disease that makes it sneak up and bite the victim in the butt.

I would like to commend all who have posted thus far on your showing compassion & understanding a lack of judgement. Seems like the non-alcoholic friends & families here demonstrate real heart, unlike on some other forums here at SR. As an alcoholic I thank you all. Hopefully Mr. Gibson has hit the end of his road.

I'm sorry he is an alcoholic, but his racist anti Jewish rant deserves no pity. He should get what he deserves......lock him up for driving and drinking, shun him for his racism.

Guy, the two have nothing to do with each other. Too bad you are still so bitter.

Moving on..it is sad and very much a reminder that this disease is not picky..

Holy cow .. if that's not reverse racism (if there is such a thing) I don't know what is.

Personally, I hope Mel Gibson succeeds in rehab this time around I wish him the best. It's a horrible disease alcoholism. I hope his family and children are OK. Good for him for going to rehab.

Guy - I agree with you that the drinking is not an excuse for the comments Mel Gibson made. It could be a reason, but not an excuse. Or, possibly, he actually is a racist. (I truly hope not) Either way, like it or not, comments like that are covered under the Freedom of Speech act.

I'm not surprised that celebrities receive special treatment.......I'm not saying Mel Gibson did, because I don't know.......but they do, they get VIP treatment everywhere they go. It really is not a big shock.

I hope he gets help for his drinking problem.
