Layman's theory on what causes alcoholism!!!

Went to a gathering yesterday and a young girl was there with her baby. The little bitty thing was obviously teething as she was gnawing on her fist. Mom piped up and said, "You know how the old timers used to rub brandy on an infants gums to soothe them?" "Well, that causes them to be an alcoholic when they grew up".

I know how I reacted and what I said...

Feed Back anyone?

A small amount of brandy would result in a mildly sedated baby...not an alcoholic-in-waiting. If we give a child a cookie does that mean they'll grow up and get diabetes? Reminds me of 'if you get a chill you'll catch a cold'. No germs...just cool air. Sheesh!

This made me chuckle!!!

Coming from Europe ..... where this practice is still being used ..... then they'd ALL be alcoholics!!!!!!

I'm not belittling this .... I just found it humorous.

It's funny because just earlier today I wondered whether we alcoholics carry a gene or a personality trait that links us to alcoholism. Except that didn't seem to make much sense to me since I didn't START drinking until I was 43!!!!!
