Drinking + red skin(veins), it reversible?
Have been hitting it very hard for the past 2 years, something bad happened and set me off, so have drank 100-150 beers a week for last couple years, I usually workout alot so am physically fit besides being a complete drunk, and shaking/sweating all the time, I tanned alot, but got to a point just stayed red.
I stopped tanning and I am still red! Can see tiny little veins on my cheeks under my eyes, on my nose, and if I look closely, everywhere, this sucks, is it reversable?
I am seeing a therapist, but of course she wants to commit me to a drunk center when I was honest about how much I drink and what I feel like, so trying my hardest to not drunk this week and see what happens, it is hell, but seeing my red face in the mirror just kills me.
Almost nothing in the internet about the veins close to the surface thing.

Mill - I can find a lot about the causes of the redness & enlarged capillaries, but nothing (via a quick search) about the reversibility of these things. My best guess would be that both would subside (particularly the generalized redness) if you stop drinking and start taking care of yourself. I think you pretty much knew that already, though. Irreversible varices (dilated/distended veins) can occur, however, if you reach the point of liver cirrhosis. That particular condition can be life threatening & it's different from surface capillaries showing.
Good to hear from you. Sounds like you're doing better? I hope so.

Dan,
I'm not expert at all, but, I have rosetia. It is a skin condition. Bill Clinton and other celebs have had it. Rosetia is NOT a drinking condition, although drinking MAY exercerbate it. But, so can spicy foods and other things.
You need to see a skin specialist. There is treatment. An antibiotic and cream that lessens the lines. And I know that there is a surgery that can help. I'm not going to bother, but, mine is not too bad. Anyway, I don't have time for that nonsense! LOL!
Please get a skin specialist to check it out. Don't worry about superficial things. Take care of yourself. Get hold of that drinking. That's the important thing, here. AA might be helpful for you...
Wishing you much luck and success in your quest to quit!

Hi Mill,
I have horrible redness in my face when I drink. It subsides a bit when I stop, but I think it is partly a genetic thing. It still happens when I am sober, but not as much.
I bought this Eucerin redness relief soap & mousterizer, and it helps. But I haven't found anything that takes it away completely. I am hoping that with more sobriety, it goes away!
I know how you feel about this though, it's like a badge of drinking that you wear every day.

Thanks all,
I never had any problems before this latest massive bender though, so can it even remotely be rosacea? I can almost imagine why, when I am drinking, and hungover, I always felt like I was about to jump out of my skin, felt flushed, hot, itchy sort of, maybe just my blood trying to get out!!
Day 4 sober, uggghhh, still no sleep, still crazy dreams, still waking up in pools of sweat, this is hard, man this is hard. Cool thing is not eating much, lost 6 pounds already in 4 days. Just want to walk into crazy-head-lady's office on monday and say "there, see, I can stop without whitecoats!"

Don't they call those beautiful broken blood vessels "gin blossoms"? I had quite a few across my nose when i was partying and I am happy to say after 7 months of being sober they have almost completely disappeared! Maybe you will have the same luck dan. Congrats on your clean time!

I can help
Hi,
I am a medical esthetician here in the atl area and it sounds as if you definately have rosacea, while it is incurable it is treatable. The first thing you need to do is recognize the triggers, look out for when it acts up, i.e. after taking a hot shower, eating spicy food, drinking alcohol, or heat, even from a cup of tea. When you recognize the triggers you can somewhat control them. If they dont flare uo and the caps are visible all of the time the best thing for you to do would to have an ipl treatment, intense pulse light, that will shut down those caps and make them less noticable or completely eliminate then altogether. You can also get a topical med from a derm. called finacea that has worked wonders for a lot of my clients. Please feel free to email me for more info, I love helping people w/ their skin when I can, My email is [email protected].
Good luck,
Christine

I don't have any veins or capillaries visible, even when looking close up, but my face has a redness that is VERY visible. People comment on it. I am dark skinned naturally (Middle Eastern/Sicilian ancestry) and have always in the past been brownish year round. I am now brownish red. It's embarassing at times, I wear big shades sometimes after a bad binge to cover as much as I can.
I am also hoping with time that this will diminish significantly if not dissapear.
This forum is such an amazing place, I wish I had found it sooner.

when i drank, my skin (face) took on an awful tone, would get very red, puffy, even my nose looked bigger!! in the two weeks that i haven't had any alcohol, i've noticed a big difference in how my face looks. i would imagine that when you have given up the alcohol, you will see improvements in your skin/tiny veins. i can only say what i've experienced.

I think he knows that
I entered this forum because I spent a summer out in the sun like I never have in my life. This included 3 hour walks on the hottest days here in the midwestern United States. I am 54 and for the first time I have some small vien lines and even one open sore from all this.
I drink, eat spicey food, as I said been out in the extreme heat and have been under a lot of stress.
I am hoping now that fall is near, if I don't drink, stay out of the saunas at the fitness club cut down ( I live with a woman whose native food is spicey ) on spicey food that in a half years time or so my face will improve.
Any thoughts?

I used to get pink cheeks from dilated capillaries all the time from drinking. It would last for days and people would comment on it. I actually would use a little bit of makeup to cover it up. Since I have stopped drinking (8/3/11), I no longer have that issue. My cheeks are looking more and more normal everyday and I haven't used any makeup at all. It gets better once you stop drinking. Give it time and don't drink.

It's amazing how you feel when you are able to get out of bed on a weekend morning with no hangover, have a great productive day and actually have no fear of going to work Monday morning. That's where I'm trying to get to and for more than 1 weekend in a row.
