Narcolepsy and Alcoholism
I have narcolepsy,as well as several other sleeping disordres. I am also in addiction recovery since 1989, two relapses, but 15 out of 17 years clean and sober. Anyone else out there with sleeping disoreder, would love to talk.
I haven't slept.. I don't know if its a sleeping disorder or early recovery. I haven't just fell asleep in a long time, being I ususally just pass out. Today is Ok but at night its really tough.
Hi Humbird and welcome!
I'm sure someone will be along with a similar story. I know several suffer from insomnia.
Congrats on you 15 years!
Susan.. took me 3 months to get 6 hours, so hang tough, have you tried melatonin?

Hiya Hummingbird,
My GF who lives way North has Narcolepsy.
I know she has had it since the age of 15, she is 49 now.
She is now somewhat twitchy, because of the meds
she needed to take to stay awake.
It's amazing what long term amphetamines do to a body, although
I don't know if that is the case for every Narcoleptic.
I sure wish she was online, she could really relate.
Hugs to you.

Hi Humbird,
I've been reading quite a lot recently about possible links between a genetic 'sleep disorder' and alcoholism. Apparently in studies mice that have this particular mutation (which causes a dysfunctional body clock) tend to drink more alcohol than normal mouses. As if they're using alcohol to force their body clock into some sort of rhythm.
Nothing to do with narcolepsy of course but interesting all the same. I've always been bad - as is my father - when it comes to sleep patterns - I can go a week with 2 hours a night, then a week with 12 per night, there's no pattern at all and it does my cheese in to be honest. I hope you manage to deal with your condition ok. It must be awful.
I'm off for a lie down now..
Deg.

WOOOW 15 Years that's an amazing long time to be sober...Mostly I like to be awake at night (but the society don't really allows that)So I miss a lot of sleep sometimes...And I know that's a danger to relapse...But we are learning to deal with it....Love from $tef@nie....
