I'm just curious....
I saw a TV commercial today - for the first time ever, promoting Al-Anon. I thought it was pretty cool. But does this go against the tradition? I didn't think anything of it until I ready something in another forum.

I've been following the thread on the AA board here about traditions and this topic came up in relations to AA adverts on TV in the UK.
I feel a bit uneasy about this. I know that I had no idea about al-anon until I came here. But I don't know whether that was because the information wasn't out there, or whether I was in denial and too blind to see it. I was probably thinking of the help I could get for my A ex, rather than help for me.
Attraction not promotion? Don't we call adverts "promotions"?
I'm going to have a bit more of a think about this.

No, the World Service Office in NYC decided about 20 years ago that those are "Public Service Announcements."
After many many discussions, and input from members it was decided, is my understanding that it was not breaking anyones annonimity.
Therefore, the commercials or "Public Service Announcements" you see for AA and Alanon are approved by the World Services Office, and have ususally been made by them, for local areas to insert the local phone numbers.
Hope this helps.......

I haven't seen any PSAs, but I have no objection myself. There are soooooooooooooo many families suffering from this disease who might not otherwise get the message that hope is available.

I haven't seen the ads, but I think it's GREAT that the info. is being put out to the general public...there is no break of anonymity by advertising the availability of a service/support group. Anything that will help people who are in need is fine by me!
