He's getting married. Do we go to the party?
Where to begin. This guy has been my friend for over 23 years. He's an active alcoholic. My husband and I are recovering addicts. He has invited us to his wedding party on New Year's Eve. This guy was there for me over 20 years ago when my best friend was killed (by a drunk driver no less). I feel I owe him a lot.
I think things like his wife-to-be must be a loser for marrying him, like "someone" should intervene on him. We're pretty much planning on going to the party with the undertanding that we might have to split suddenly, but what then? I mean, this guy is great, but he's also an apalling drunk. I made a snide remark one time and felt terrible, but I really don't know what to do.
Thanks y'all!
Love and hugs,
Eddie

He may be a good friend, but you don't owe him your sobriety,
If going for a short time is comfortable for you and your husband, then certainly go and have your escape well planned. If you are uncomfortable, perhaps arrange a get-together another time, maybe meet them for dinner sometime.
New Years is an easy time to ""have other plans". Do what feels right for you.

Thanks, Day and Ann (again)! I guess we could just go and deliver a gift and split. I don't want to see him wasted again. It's just pathetic. I hate it! He has so much potential and throws it all away. Aaarrgghh!
