Hey ya big dummies! :)

Are you going to lose today? Are you going to give in? Are you going to give up on yourself? Or are you going to live another day sober? For some of us it will be easy, sobriety has become second nature and we protect it like a mother does a child. For some of us it will be hard. We will wonder if we can do it or not. We will ask ourselves if it’s worth it to be sober today if we know we’ll just drink again in the future...if something is wrong with us because we just can’t get it.

Well, my friends, here’s the good news. All we have to make it through is today! Isn’t that amazing?!? We can’t do anything about tomorrow or even yesterday. Just today. So what will you do?

The weather is changing...might you take a walk? Your dog will appreciate it. People are having garage sales, maybe go buy some junk you don’t need (it’s one of my vices). Or how about a special breakfast out? Just think of how much money and how many calories you’ll save today by being sober. Maybe you’ll call a friend you haven’t talked to. Or go to IMDB and find the best 100 movies of all time and watch one you haven’t yet. Are you married or in a relationship? Then you could do something nice for your partner, maybe plan to make a dinner, or buy some flowers, a neck massage. Even a small sit down to tell them you know what a jackass you’ve been but you’re working on it. Do You like to journal? Maybe make a list of things you’re grateful for today, some things you’re struggling with, then look at which items are out of your control and let them go for today. Have you been wanting to add more to your program, maybe try an online or in person zoom AA meeting today. Maybe you’ll reach out and send someone on this board a private message to give them encouragement or to thank them for a post they made. Maybe go shopping and buy an outfit, or a book, or a plant for the yard.

Make a list of things you might do today that will help you stay sober. Then do one or two or all of those things. Then at the end of the day, tell yourself (and God if you’re like me), thank you. Thank you for another day sober. We did it today, and when we wake up tomorrow we’ll do whatever it takes to do it again. This ain’t so hard if we break it up into chunks.

Much love to those who have figured it out and to us boneheads that are still stumbling around looking for the way out. We do this thing a day at a time around here. So do it today.

I'm still a big dummy, but I'm going to stay a sober one.

Thank you BABM for a terrific post. 3rd paragraph in particular would've been a huge help back when I was so lost.

Well, I suppose we could have a drink and talk about its some more... or not. Hmmm, "or not..." Yeah, lets take our dog for that walk. Let's see what's going on at SR. Let's end up NOT being miserable.

How did we ever think of that?

I'm heeding the call summoning Big Dummies every where . . . so far I've: done 30 min of yoga (first exercise in a week), led my Dad in some exercise, called my sister, taken out trash and recycle, and best of all, figured out I downloaded bank information into my Banktivity credit card account - oops.

Now to read some of my Spanish novel, make my Dad's bed and find something I'm sewing.

What a great post BABM. So many great and interesting things to do when we're sober. I don't want alcohol to remove these possibilities anymore than it already has. It's a thief, and I won't be having it. Thanks BABM.

I love op shops and garage sales too. Always interesting.

Been following your posts for months BABM and it is night and day with you. You’re such an inspiration with your sobriety this time around and you speak a lot of words of wisdom. I exercised for an hour this morning and just finished a nice big lunch. Not exercising and being hungry are definitely triggers for me. Now for a nap because being tired can be another one.
