Double Nelson
(Forgive me for probably the most English post EVER!)
Today I reach double Nelson. I often think of my sobriety like a cricket innings - scratching about at the beginning; going through rough patches when you've just got to hang in there; best of all that great cliche 'just focus on the next ball'.
Id like to think David Shepherd is watching down on me standing on one leg

Just to explain some of that cricketing nonsense! - a Nelson is a score of 111 that some people see as unlucky (or multiples thereof). I'm on day 222.
And David Shepherd was a famous cricket umpire who was very superstitious and wouldn't have both feet on the ground when the score was on 111, 222, 333 etc. He became a favourite with the crowd for his hopping and balancing antics 😂. He is pictured and died some years ago

I am going so far off on a tangent here but I also just looked it up and one theory for the origin of 'Nelson' meaning 111 was that Admiral Nelson lost 1 arm, 1 eye and 1 'something else' 😂
Another theory is that 111 is unlucky because it looks like the three stumps
Have a great day, I'm simply over joyed to be sober today

Congratulations BE123 on reaching the three little Ducks ; ( talking of which another cricketing term Duck , Golden Duck ) . Those were great days with David Shepherd and Dickie Bird and listening to the The Test Match Special team , ( whilst watching it on the telly ) .
Back in those days there seemed to be real personalities , whether it be in sport , or music etc . They all seem so bland today.
Here's to your next Nelson !

Good old David shepherd is no doubt hopping about in heaven this morning.
Not only did England beat Sri Lanka in Galle today (oh I wish I'd been there!) but also...
...I am on day 333 since a drink today 😁
On the cricket theme, graham Gooch once scored 333 against India, i remember it, I guess I was about ten when that happened.

I knew exactly what a double Nelson was Well done!
I was lucky enough to see Australia v England in Sydney at the start of 2018. It was the first time I’d watched cricket without drinking! I was still a drinker at the time, but I’d started looking after my health and was exercising. I was never much of a daytime drinker anyway, but the thought of running that evening with beers sloshing around inside didn’t appeal. To be honest, the cricket wasn’t that interesting so I watched the drunken goings on in the crowd instead.
Well done again

I’m passed the stage of being tempted by beer, but it’d be odd to watch a whole day’s cricket against as a non-drinker. Watching cricket and alcohol seem to partner up. I don’t mind people drinking moderately, but I doubt I’d tolerate the falling over drunkenness that goes on. I think future cricket viewing will be on TV!
