10 years sober today!
10 years ago today I was lost.
I was in a car being driven to a treatment facility by my wife and her friend to help me medically detox, as I had been on a multiple day bender. I was hospitalized for 3 days. During that time I had the opportunity to attend my first AA meeting. It was nothing like I had envisioned and I found it comforting. During my stay I was treated by a very kind Doctor who shared with me that he was also a member of AA.
Upon discharge I returned home, still somewhat lost. However had I gained some tools, guidance and phone numbers to help me find my way.
Each day I went to bed sober was a victory, but it was certainly a "one day at a time" thing. I would never, ever have believed that I would be writing a post like this, 10 years later.
When I first started counting the length of my sobriety, the unit of time I used was hours. Now the unit of time is years, which I find amazing. If I can do it, so can you.
