**475 days minus 6

Been away for training for my new job. Intense training for 4 weeks. Heading towards 16 months (minus the experiment I did) sober. Life could not be better. The thought of drinking and living like the old me is totally gone. I don't think of alcohol unless I see it around or on TV. I compare it to when I smoked. As a non smoker now I don't think of smoking unless when I see it and I shrug. I shrug now when I see people drinking. My partner has quit (normal drinker) totally. I am lucky as I know many are in a relationship where the other half drinks.
During my month away from home in training I met 13 others in my raining class. All of them drank. I made it clear from the beginning that I didn't drink and no questions asked once. From then on I was just the non drinker. We socialised most evenings together and I was exposed to various situations where alcohol was involved. I still laughed, joked and had a good time. No separation anxiety from alcohol at all. I was known as the early riser and always first one at the transport to the training center.
God if they only known what I was like 16 months ago!!
Change is possible and wonderful. I am living a true honest life where I do not need a chemical trying to enhance it in any way shape or form.
I had setbacks, victories, disappointments, challenges and wins during my training and SEVERAL examinations (that I passed). I did not need to numb or elevate the feels I just sat with them and let it all flow.
I feel content happy and free.

I'll be that guy.

I think you should reconsider counting '475 days -minus 6'.

I'm not talking about punishing yourself for a relapse or discounting that great run of a year plus that you had - I just think it's very important to be honest with ourselves.

For me '475-6' would make it that much easier to have, say '556 days- 18'.

I don't expect you to agree with me, but I felt the need to post - I think honesty and a willingness to be honest - even when it hurts - is an important issue.

Hello D..
This time I do not agree with you sorry. I needed and wanted to have my “experiment”. I did it and I achieved from it what I was after. 😊

Sydneyman, of your last 475 days 98.7% have been entirely alcohol-free. Well done.

Thank you sortofhomecomin.. I am very honest and posting here about my individual journey in recovery.
That minus 6 is a very important number to me.
In another sober recovery forum this guy has close to 800 days and allows himself drinks every 6 months as NEVER is too daunting for him.
I may not agree with his method but that means out of 365 days he drinks twice. I think that’s HUGE..Maybe not cookie cutter sobriety but seems to work for him and that’s his journey and I respect that.
😊😊

Not everyone will be in that cookie cutter range. Congratulations on your journey. That's pretty awesome. Congratulations on passing your examinations also.

Fair enough.
Its strange for me to be the outlier here but ok.

I'd just hate anyone reading to get the idea that you need to test,or experiment with, your recovery by drinking again.

Thats complete nonsense.

I had twenty years of experimenting and raw data to fall back upon.
Honestly I think you had enough raw data too Sydneyman.

That is a very good point, Dee. No one should be encouraged to experiment at all. It defeats the goal of what you are trying to do.

The only other thing I wanted to say was no one here can really be sure it'll only be 6 days of drinking if they decide to experiment...and they can't really guarantee what might happen during those 6 days or 6 weeks, or 6 years or however long it takes a bender to burn out, if it does.

I'm not just being a jerk for the sake of it.
The AV will use whatever leeway we give it.

I hope you never feel the need have to experiment again Sydneyman

I pretty much stopped going to a f2f recovery group for personal reasons.

They considered 1 medicinal or celebratory drink a relapse.

So if I am going to relapse I may as well do it right. Right?

But, if a Dr. Gives me xanex, I am gtg. I can give folks shade and advice about drinking a slug a year.

Smh.

Thanks.

this is very true. Not everyone would be able to stop. A lot of people would go on benders and not be able to stop.
