Saving the money I used to use on wine

Here is part of my plan:
I live in Norway- feeding an alcoholic (me) is very expensive here. A few days before I closed the drinking chapter in my life, I calculated how mutch I could save by stopping my habit.
My plan is to buy stock founds for the same amount every month. The point is to put the money where it is not so easy to withdraw. This way I will be out of debts in 13 months.
I get thrilled by the idea to be sober and with positive numbers on my bank accounts. That is FREEDOM to me

Best regards from Norway folks!

That is a much better use of your money than buying/drinking wine.

My eldest daughter has spent time in Norway years ago as a student. She met a lot of our distant relatives and had a great time there. She's got the same name as my paternal grandmother so she was welcomed everywhere she went.

But the prices scare visitors a bit....

Hi Skybert, I am from Ireland. I have never visited your beautiful country but would love to. Yes I have read that alcohol is quite difficult and expensive to purchase in Norway, compared to most of the rest of Europe. I spend 'only' €90 a week on my drinking habit in Ireland, which is otherwise an expensive country.

When she went, my mother tried to discourage her from going, saying she'll not have money to live. But she went to college for almost a year and gained weight due to all our relatives feeding her when she'd visit!

Great idea skybert! I know from visiting Norway a few times a number of years ago how expensive alcohol can be so saving that money will soon add up to a big amount.

Sky, do you not risk losing it in that? Used to be a banker so this is my thing.

The founds are based on stock indexes, with a «basket» of several shares. I use two founds, one worldwide, and one national. Since new year, the international is up 4,5%, and the national is up 3%.
It is medium risk, and with a horizon of five to ten years, it is quite safe.

Problem is that we have negative interest on savings accounts in Norway at the moment.

I think I can take this risk. Earlier this money was doomned to total distruction of both health and relations

...and I have never been to Ireland. Your country has been in my bucket list for ages! Time to start planning!

90 euros is considerable. The last months of my habit, I turned 170...euros. Embarrassing...

I’m paying off debt too skybert which feels wonderful.

I wasted thousands of dollars on drink I could have spent on travel. . .

I had this plan a while back then thought about it.

I'm just going to pay down debt myself, but if you go that way that's your decision.

Usually it's not recommended since debt has interest usually. At least my debt does.

That sounds like a fabulous plan! Be sure to post again when, because you quit drinking, you were able to get debt free!! For me, that is a huge motivator.

I am paying my debts allready on a monthly basis and speeding it up now. The stock project is money I can afford to «play» with. I have had a stock savings plan for a year now, and only gearing up both that, and depts payment.

When I got sober, I, too, wondered what I was going to do with all of the money.

So I bought a houseboat and a brand new speedboat.

Problem solved.
