6 weeks
6 weeks sober today.
Feeling a lot better this week. I notice that I don't think about drinking now. I can handle stress now without having a drink. It seems to be getting easier.
Thanks for all the support.

That's awesome Mary. It's often hard for the first few weeks and I know what you mean about wanting to turn to a drink for almost any reason, and gradually that reflex dies away. Keep going - what's your next goal?
Recovery support sent your way Mary.
When life throws you a curve ball and you want
to run to that old stand by, liquid courage that is
poison, quickly grab your lifelines here or other
recovery support for answers.
If you or anyone who has had a little bit of sober
time takes a drink of alcohol, it will return you
right back to where you were when you stopped
6 weeks ago.
Do you remember where you were 6 weeks ago?
What was going on? How you were feeling? What
made you put the drink down 6 weeks ago?
Do you want to return to that point again?
Those are just a few questions to keep asking
yourself to avoid returning to that merry go round
of insanity you wanted off 6 weeks ago.
You never have to go back there again or reset
you sobriety date if you continue to learn how
to remain sober each day. To avoid daily life struggles
and face them with healthier helpful tools instead
of alcohol to numb them.
If there is something you are facing in life that you
dont know how to solve, turn to your support system
emmediately and ask what or how to work thru it.
Suggestions from many who have been there or done
the same similar thing as you will help you figure it out
and not run to alcohol that wont solve it but will only
numb and set you back to the beginning where, NO one
wants to go back to. Right?
Stay strong and sober and use all your recovery tools
more so than ever in your first yr of sobriety. Look to
those who are achieving each day sober. There could
be something there you can use in your life too.
Now is the point where folks may say....okay, I have a
month sober, not a drop of alcohol. Now what? What
more do you want from me? Im not drinking, isn't that
enough?
No it is not.
Now you have to learn how to live life on a daily
bases, facing everyday lifes problems without the
crutch of alcohol.
It's time to keep learning.

Thank you, Sharon. I appreciate all the advice and encouragement you give me.
I was a mess 6 weeks ago. I knew alcohol was destroying me but it seemed impossible to stop drinking. I tried to stop so many times but couldn't. I think 6 weeks ago a miracle happened.

Everyday without a drink for an alcoholic in
recovery is a miracle. Even for me. Sometimes
life can be a pain or struggle and with wanting
to control it, I know I cant and it will be a losing
battle until I accept that somethings are just meant
to be.
If I cant control people, places or things, then I say
my Serenity Prayer, Then with courage to change
something I will learn how to do it properly with a
healthier outcome.
Im never too old or too wise to remain teachable.
As a matter of fact, im learning form you today.
And that is not drinking today and learning something
new to better my life situations for a healthier outcome.

Six weeks is an important milestone. All sobriety milestones, and I think those in the first year are especially important. Six weeks is still a miracle like feeling, but you took some difficult and very important steps to make it happen. It was about that time I was clearly seeing where sobriety would take me. I knew I could do it for the rest of my life. Having a month under my belt made me want one year. Oh how I wanted that first year, and it's odd because what's a year in the rest of your life? I knew at 6 weeks that there was no reason I would ever have to drink again, and knowing that seems really important to me now. You don't have to drink ever. It's a simple choice, but one of the most important choices for the rest of your life.
At 6 weeks you're experiencing some control. The only way you can lose control is by choosing to drink again. Being out of control is a sickening feeling. Don't give it up.

The good news is that like getting over the cravings, the vigilance will become second nature and not something you will have to force as hard as you do in the beginning. It will be something that just happens in the background. I think it became my default state after the first year. But it's not a long year, because you will be enjoying happy surprises along the way, like one day realizing you haven't even thought about alcohol for a week.
