Desk Cleaning

Hey all. Back in my active drinking days, as the booze slowly took control of my life, things slipped more and more and became less and less of myself. Of course, I didn't realize any of this at the time (I'm sure you all can relate)

One of the things that really got away from me is my messy desk at work. I do a lot of different things at my job and create a lot of paperwork. Eventually I had piles of paperwork that were stacking up and the bigger it got, the harder it was to deal with (a metaphor for all things in an alcoholic's life).

Even in the ten months now sober, I haven't been able to deal with it....until today. Today, I'm kicking butt on getting it cleaned up. I'm thinking to myself, why now? Why not 6 months ago or 9 months ago? It's like some new neurons just started firing in my brain and I finally realized how unacceptable the situation was.

It really does take this long for things to even start to get back to 'normal'. When I stopped drinking, I thought I'd be back to myself in a few weeks, but even though every sober day has better than the last, it really does take a while to start feeling like myself. Just when I start to get a little bored with sobriety, a find a new part of myself open up.

A messy desk is no big deal in the grander scheme of things, but again, it's a metaphor for things slowly going back to what they should be.

Recovery really is a journey. And, I agree with you about mess and I don't like living with clutter. Good job on deciding to clean up your desk area.

I learn daily. Sober living is my problem, drinking used to be the solution. Living sober is not easy for me sometimes.

I like the adventure!

Every day presents the opportunity for new victories, little battles that once we never considered, but now we can achieve if we put our minds to it.

Stopping drinking can happen overnight, but Sobriety is a journey to revolutionise our lives, and each step can take time!!

Well said Knight and it sums up the point of my post very profoundly!

“Sobriety is a journey to revolutionize our lives.”

That was so profoundly stated. Thank you.

Wow, this post is so relevant to me! I have been sober since May 2018 and my healing mind still shows me that I continue to get better.
Being present and engaged in life is the opposite of what I was when I was drinking. I love being organized and in control of my home and work life.
I enjoy feelings of true contentment in my life now.
