Struggling

Hi my name is Claire, I’ve had a problem with alcohol for the last 10 years. I am disgusting I try to stop but can’t, I’ve tried AA and Aspire but they don’t work for me. I’m currently trying to taper off my last bender, I feel crap shivering can’t sleep and I’m scared.

Welcome and I'm glad you found us. Take a look around here and you will see people using different methods to achieve sobriety and recovery. The main thing is your motivation and to find what works for you.

You are where I was a couple of months ago.

Actually I was worse.

I went to my doctor, put life on "hold" and took care of ME for awhile.

If I got through that nightmare, you can get through by taking the right actions and allowing yourself to heal.

My doctor gave me anti depressants and Im better every day.

I have NO desire to drink or even look at alcohol.

You just need to find what works for you. You can be free of that junk. Its nothing but misery.

You can do this Misspolly. The shivers / chills are rough but they only last a day or so. I had them bad. Of course, if you feel like you need it, seek medical help for your withdrawals.

Once you get through withdrawal, come up with a plan to keep yourself sober. Then just work that plan, hit your marks, keep moving forward and count your sober days.

Keep trying AA, give it another chance, even it means just giving yourself to do to keep your mind occupied for the first few days. You don't have to make it a lifestyle long term. Use it as a crutch until you feel better.

I agree with everyone else: you can do this MissPolly. I signed on to SR four months ago and I haven't had a drink since that day. And I was a daily drinker, minimum of a bottle of wine a night. Stick with us. SC is right that you need a plan but it needn't be too complicated. Mine is not much more than making sure I to do a specific amount of exercise at certain times each day and that I sign on here and post each and every day. I am not young. You don't have to wait until you are as old as I am to do this. You can have many more alcoholic free days than are now available to me! Lots of luck and hope to see you posting again soon.

Thank you for your reply’s. I hit rock bottom last week and went on a bender😢 I do have family and friends that I can turn to, but nobody gets the addiction unless you’ve been there. I do agree that having a plan in place is essential, but I haven’t done that in the past, this time I will, as I’m sick of it.

I tried to taper off yesterday it didn’t work. Having a medical detox is not an option for me. I hate this poison, so today I’m trying again to taper😢

If you go through my past threads you'll see that I was binging and purging with alcohol, facing a bogus shoplifting charge over some toilet paper that ended up costing me a thousand dollars and a ton of misery, and had taken 60 Klonopin in a four day period to "try to even myself out".

People here told me to go to the hospital, but I was done. Just done. With alcohol, misery, life...

I came off everything by myself, went to my doctor and got checked and stabilized on antidepressants.

My life may not be "fun" or back to 100%, but Im a million times better.

This is after many fits and starts.

Once I finally got it through my head that there was NO relief in even ONE, it lost its appeal.

You will never win so dont get into a fight with the bottle.

People here have tried many times and many ways.

Just dont beat yourself up. Thats what your brain wants right now- so it can convince you that you need another drink.

Rewire and retrain that brain.

The compulsion WILL go away. I had it BAD.

Some days I dont feel great, but I dont even imagine drinking will make it better.

Just dust yourself off and shower, eat, exercise, rest.

It does get better. I applaud your effort ...big step ...

Miss Polly,
Come over and join us in the October 2019 class group. We’d love to have you with us. Most of us are new to sobriety and it s a good “home base”.

I've found that sobriety is action. Once you detox your way, start a journal. It can help immensely!

My anxiety is calming down. I have had a little to drink to cope with the withdrawals. It’s been hell, but I so want my life back.

I think it’s going better, I’ve cut back a lot. Hopefully tomorrow I won’t need any.

And exactly how will you do that if you do the same things you’ve always done to try to quit?

You say AA didn’t work for you. Probably more likely you didn’t work it.

When I continued to try to use willpower to quit, I continued to fail. I had to change my approach.
