Tonight is tough...
Tonight is tough...
My two favorite sports teams are playing tonight and I am absolutely dying for bottle of vodka. It's hard. I'm so used to getting hammered watching sports and it just isn't the same sober. Just sitting in my misery at the moment. Ugh.
Had to reach out and vent...

I feel you PuckLuck. I'm a big sports fan and the watching games / drinking combo was always a big part of it. You did a good thing by posting and venting. The bad thoughts will pass - you know that. You'll thank yourself in the morning - big time.
Sitting in your misery?? Just think how you'd feel tomorrow if you drank.
I find watching sports infinitely better sober.
Even attending games, like I'm going to do Sunday, is much more fun sober.
And I don't have to check to see what the score was because I was so drunk.
Enjoy and I hope your teams win.

Thanks everyone. Just going to tough it out because if I give in I'll just hate myself in the morning and I'll have a Saturday full of self-loathing which would probably lead to more alcohol. Vicious cycle.
Hard to break the habit of watching sports and drinking for years and years and years...

Hi PuckLuck. I know just what you mean - alcohol was part of almost everything I did at the end of my drinking career. When I stopped, in the early days it felt like something was missing - I was very sorry for myself. Still, I knew my dependency on it for fun, relaxation, or to get through stressful times - was going to kill me in the end. I'd been at it for decades, & it couldn't continue. The resentment I felt when newly sober was replaced with gratitude & a fresh way of looking at things. Yes, it feels strange as we transition to a new way of living - but you'll be so much better off sober & clear-headed. No regrets or remorse tomorrow. Give yourself chance to adjust.
Glad you posted - be proud of yourself.

That is also one thing I am going to have to adjust to as well. I would pregame drink before the game drink and usually postgame drink after. Going to feel different not drinking at all during but I am sure not going to miss feeling like absolute garbage the next day.
It may take a little time, but you will find enjoyment in things without drinking.
Million of people manage to watch TV sports without alcohol - you can do this
If it's too hard right now maybe skip the games for a little while until you feel stronger?

Sobriety is only miserable if you let it be. Just think of all the benefits of being sober and count your blessings. You'll feel good in the morning. You won't have to worry if you did/said anything wrong. You'll remember the game. Instead of being miserable, be glad you have a TV to watch the game and electricity to power the TV.
Yup, I did the same thing.

Hey Puck - glad you shared. Lots of things connect to alcohol and my husband is one who hasn't eaten wings since he quit drinking because he only did while watching sports at bars
I am glad you didn't drink.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm glad I reached out. Very happy I didn't drink. I actually made a huge chef salad instead 😂 and got a good nights sleep. It's 7 am now, just woke up and I'm about to have my coffee and breakfast to start the day.
If I would have drank last night I would've probably woke up pissed off around noon and been in a bad mood all day.

Hey puckluck, don't know if you are a hockey fan like me with that name? Trust me that passes. Actually what became awesome for me, is I really grew to watch and love sports like I did when I was a kid! I definitely went through the same thing at first, but just like anything in recovery, you retrain your brain, to actually be present for the moment.
