I have a family member, late thirties, who has hearing loss due to multiple ear infections, in one ear. She got a hearing aid which she is thrilled with, and it's all but invisible. Try to let go of the age-related issue with hearing loss and see what's available and affordable for you. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years it continued to get worse. Again I wasn't aware of it. but eventually I started having difficulty watching movies. At first I thought Hollywood wasn't paying attention to dialog, but focusing on explosions, but I really couldn't fully believe that either. I started turning on the subtitles while watching DVDs.
Finally, after a couple years of this, I went to see a hearing specialist, and tested very badly in the high frequency ranges. He told me I needed hearing aids. They're kind of expensive, but here's a tip. Somehow I heard about cheaper hearing aids at Costco, so I looked into it. Costco had to do their own hearing tests (which were free). Their test, given by a trained employee, but without a fancy diploma was actually in more depth than the hearing specialist. The test results matched the hearing specialist's. And I saved $1000 dollars.
Hearing aids reopened a whole new world I had forgotten about. My first reaction was negative. The noise that exists in the real world was almost unbearable. Door knobs make a racket, and stacking dishes in the cabinets make a racket, but your brain adjusts to it. Hearing aids don't just make things louder. They are adjusted to bring frequencies into your hearing range. Like glasses, they are tailored to your needs.
After 4 years, the Costco aids failed, which I understand is about the average life of a pair. So for the next pair, I decided to go all out and get the more expensive kind for an extra $1000. They work good, but I think Costco's generic Kirkland brand is slightly better. May not be true for everyone. I'll buy the Kirklands from now on.

I temporarily lost hearing for almost 8 months due to an infection. It is better now, but I have to be really careful, I end up with fluid there first if I get sick. Plus scar tissue. It was awful to lose my hearing.
I expect in time I will need hearing aids.

Paulsandy, I can definitely relate to this one; I had multiple ear infections when young and have had left-sided hearing loss most of my life which has gotten worse-I am 59 now. After a recent, lingering ear infection I still haven't recovered my usual range and am going to look into hearing aids; I've returned to school and find it hard to hear the instructors and fellow students. Wishing you the best with your issues.
