Did you get sick (colds) a lot first year of recovery?

I知 coming up on 4 months and I have had the flu, sinus infection and now I知 sick again. I missed more work in sobriety than in active addiction. I was hungover but I never ever got flus or colds (for years!!!!) when drinking. Strange! Maybe the alcohol killed all the germs...just kidding.

Anyway, being sick in sobriety is miserable and depressing! I am not able to make it to meet my sponsor tonight so I値l just have to do some reading.

Yes. The first year I had all kinds or problems. Never got the flu, but colds and inflammation of my sinus and lungs. It was pretty rough. Like you, when actively drinking I'd go years without catching a cold. Currently I haven't been sick in quite some time.

After 2 weeks of giving up and being in rehab I got the worst flu imaginable. Lasted for a few weeks too. Had a lot of sinus problems but that痴 about it so far at nearly 10 months. Zinc is great for colds as is boiling root ginger and drinking the water. x

I did - the first fall I was sober was about 6-7 mo in and I had several colds that were bad enough to miss work (I was working in a restaurant) and strep.

It sucked- BUT it was much better than being hungover or sick from drinking like I tolerated being so much of the time!

My body had to keep healing for awhile in all ways. Keep going!

Yes! Sinus infections and colds were common. Didn't get the flu (I don't think).

I think it wasn't that I picked up more bugs and illnesses once I was sober, it was that as a sober person I became aware that I was unwell.

The daily booze and hangover masked other illnesses.

Yes! I got pneumonia and it was terrible. Still better than drinking and hangovers, though.

I was going to say the same - is it possible that we just notice it more?

I think by the end I was running on the artificial effects of alcohol - not sleeping much,m eating crap food...

take that artificial effect away and my immune system crashed for a while.

During my second year of sobriety, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. It was an accidental fluke that they spotted it early while checking my gall bladder. I thought, "Just when I'm starting to put my life back together, I get cancer." Well, I dodged that bullet. I'm short a kidney, but the good news is you only need one. I guess you get an extra one as a spare.

Nope. Maybe I'm lucky. I haven't been sick one time since I got sober....besides the symptoms of my actual alcoholcentric diseases.
