At what cost?
Morning SR!
I appreciate that not everyone wants to share how much sober time they have and don't want to count it, each to their own I say!
However, for me I have found it helpful so I can see my progress in different ways.
Today I am at:
8 months
227 days
I have saved £1837 (2397 usd / 3643 aud / 3149 cad)
This is just shy of 75% of my yearly mortgage!! I can't believe I would have spent that in the last 8 months if I had still been drinking. This could be a 2 week super exotic holiday, or could have my whole kitchen re-done, or if I traded in my car and used this afford me to buy a brand new car!
227 hangover free mornings!
What have you saved so far?

Fun idea, thanks.
I am about 9 years quit. Was spending about £100 a week on booze, along with other money wasted on drunk idiotic purchases.
However I will stick to just the actual booze cost. so -
9 x 52 wks is 468 wks at £100 a wk is £46,800 OH MY GOODNESS!!!
which is $61,100
Of course the £100 a week was based on the booze costs at the time, booze is way more expensive now so with inflation it would have been a ton more money.
Glad I stopped.

Putting sober/clean time into other formats is really beneficial. You start to see exactly what you've gained. Congratulations on your sobriety and the gifts it's given you.
I have no clean time at the moment. However, I'm working on tapering down on my meds before quitting them completely. I can't wait for that day. Having tried cold turkeys and fast tapers that didn't work I'm hoping that a slow taper will allow me to get my head straight with counselling and meetings before tackling the physical withdrawals.

Hey Doris, way to go!! In the first few months I used to have a mason jar on the mantal piece. Every day I would put in the money (real money) that I would have spent on wine that day. At the end of 30 days and 60 days I treated myself with the funds that had built up as an incentive to keep going.
The first 30 days got me a whopping £240 and I spent it on a spa day, a full body scrub and massage, a haircut and a meal in my favorite restaurant. That weekend I was so happy and so proud and it gave me the drive I needed to keep moving in the right direction. xx

Hmmm.. coming up to 8 weeks now and I was spending around £100 a week on booze. I'm treating myself though - I now have a small budget for hobbies and have treated myself to a new tablet (for recovery reading) and a new phone... Now just to get a proper job...
Best wishes, Forwards.

This speaks to my OCD. I have 439 sober days today (and very much enjoyed doing the math there!), and I spent an average of $23.50 on alcohol and mixers each day, and that works out to (drumroll please) ---- $10,316.50. Holy crap!
I read a sobriety book a long time ago that said, "Reward yourself for milestones; trust me, you'll be able to afford it." Today, it's birthday lunch for my 11 year old and then I think I'll have some black raspberry chocolate chip ice cream.
Thanks for the exercise, MantaLady! It helps me to see things concretely like that.

Just checked a day counter:
1150 days
3 years, 1 month, and 23 days
99,360,000s seconds
1,656,000 minutes
27,600 hours
Kind of fun to check every now and then. As for money, I don't know where my extra money has gone, but I suspect my kids have something to do with it!!

I have always been a minimalist even before I had ever heard the term. Having tons of toys and trinkets and other useless crap never interested me. This was actually a blessing as it kept me from going even further into debt while I was drinking.
After sobriety becoming debt free was one of my goals which I've accomplished. Now I max out my tax advantaged accounts (401k and HSA) and I'm putting the rest into a high yield savings account. If I continue being frugal for another year or two I think I'll have enough saved that I have a degree of financial independence. Not enough to retire but enough to live a stress free life for the remainder of my working years.

Just checked my sober app and apparently hit 5000 hours sober today, so the end of today will be day 210.
I have NO idea how much I was spending tbh. I didn't drink at all from Monday to Thursday. (if I did, which was very rarely, it would be one glass of wine when myself and my husband went for dinner)
Now that I don't drink like a maniac Friday to Sunday, I have money to spend on illustration software subscriptions and traditional art supplies I spend Friday to Sunday using those supplies to create art instead of lying on the sofa for three days clinging to a glass of rum.

This is a great post.
All I know is that I was spending my whole check a month on booze and charging my credit cards for indulgent benders. So, I'm in debt.
Sober days: 53
Sober weeks: 7
Debt paid since sober: $1518.00 ($216.00/week and $29.00/day paid)
Lots more to go. But it's progress.

I have an app that lets me know..conservatively, that in the last seven weeks...between not smoking and drinking ( I dumped both at the same time) I've saved just over 2 grand.
Somewhat sickening...I know. But..I'm putting down that money on a new bike, so I can participate in a road race this July. Really excited about it.
