Hi deblc, I was t sure where I fit in either, when I first joined. I’m so glad I did. I didn’t do detox, rehab, never did AA or Smart Recovery. But I knew my drinking was out of control and I needed support to quit and stay sober. I did individual therapy, yoga and meditation as well as intense cardio exercise and running. SR has been such a supportive group for me, and I still check in regularly even though I’ve been sober for a while now.

Welcome Debic. I'm so glad you found SR. I hope you find lots of support here.

There is a mishmash of information and good threads stickied to the top of this forum. It is a good place to start for basic information.

People here are all over the chart in quitting, relapsing, getting back on the wagon so you probably fit in somewhere.

If you want to quit you might consider joining one of the monthly classes. These are lose groups of folks who quit around the same time. If you look around the Newcomer's forum you will see the February class. You could certainly join them if you are ready to quit right now.

If you would rather you could just tell us a bit about what is going on with you right here like how long have you been drinking and why are you thinking of quitting?

That would be fine.

People start threads on this forum for whatever is on their mind having to do with early recovery. Even if you are still drinking and just thinking about quitting, talking about it here will likely glean you some feedback from a variety of folks here. Take what works for you and make sense.

Well, I'm not an expert on withdrawals. It can be dangerous so you might start by seeing a doctor and being completely honest with her about what is going on and how to minimize the dangers of withdrawal.

Also, educate yourself as much as possible . . . .hmmmm . . . maybe you already have about alcoholism and what it takes to stop and fully recovery.

Most if not all need some type of support system: AA, Smartrecovery, Celebraterecovery. Some actually just do it by getting super involved in Soberrecovery. They join one of the classes and check in regularly . . . .I'm probably getting ahead of where you are as it sounds like you need more information on how to go through withdrawals as safely as possible.

Others may be by eventually to give you more information.

Kudos to you for having the gumption to look into stopping!

Hello Deblc and welcome!
You're in the right place.
I drank a lot for thirty years and didn't know how to stop, either.
I needed help. I found it here and in Alcoholics Anonymous.
AA is meetings you go to where you meet other people who are also trying to quit drinking. They're free and the only requirement is a desire to stop drinking
I found AA very helpful.

These forums are also very useful.
I drank quite a bit more than you for the last ten years of my drinking.
I was afraid to stop. I suffered fear, regret and horrible anxiety the day after, which lead me to drink again to get rid of those symptoms of withdrawal.
It was a terrible, viscous cycle.

It's been ten years now since this drunk has had a drink. It took a lot of AA meetings and coming here.
As mentioned, you may wish to check with a doctor and be brutally honest about your drinking.
Believe me, they've heard it before so don't be embarrassed.

Best to you and I'm glad you found us. Just post any ole way you want to.
Take good care, and welcome again.

Well, you could try and find a counselor. Or therapist. That's what I did, found a therapist but I have a mental illness, too, so it was mainly for that.
But there are addiction counselors. Maybe someone else with be along with more information.
But I know there are outpatient therapees.
I don't know where you live, but check around is what I'd recommend.
Check for counselors and therapists. Maybe you can find someone.
Or maybe go to the doctor and get a referral.
Oh, and you can phone up AA and talk to someone on the phone. That's what I did and they sent someone to talk to me one on one. So that's an idea.

I wish I could help more, but that may be a start.

Hi Debic

Glad to see you.

I've been stuck for eight years or so, with a few brief stints of sobriety. Currently, I am just about 23 hrs sober - a very big deal for me. So it's hard, really hard to make the decision to quit. But I know you can do it, as evidenced by the gobs of sober people here!

If you click on any members' avatar you should see an option to message them privately.

O

You can do some private messaging on this website.

However, I think that posting is the better way to go. You will get more responses from other people and you will expand your "contacts" here.

And if you still want to talk to somebody one to one, you could start going to AA and then get a sponsor.
