Trying to stop my dangerous drinking habit.

Hey Guys,

My name is Amin i'm a 27 years old male and i'm an alcoholic.
i have been drinking almost daily for 1 year and a half now, it started after a really bad break up that left me totally broken (psychologically speaking), and now i started to realize that if i don't stop drinking, my life, my health, my finances and my relationships will be definitely ruined.
i had tried to quit many times, the longest i stayed sober was for 2 months, and here i'm again trying to take another shot.
i tried to reach to family and friends, but i don't think they understand the severity of my problem, so i gave up with them, and that's why i'm here actually, i want you to help me even with some advises, so i can quit.
ps: i'm on my "honeymoon period" i did not drink for 3 days, but i'm sure that it will get a lot tougher in the next few days...

thank you!

Amin, you have stopped in the past for two months, and that shows you have some success that you can learn from in beginning anew. I absolutely needed a support network to help me along the way. Your family and friends may begin to notice that you are serious in time and offer you more than they do today, I hope that they do. SR is a fine place to get that backup and advice that you will need. Why don't you introduce yourself to the January class for some camaraderie that you will find in a group of persons who are in a similar time period of recovery to get you started?

Welcome! You are among those who understand your problem, and battle it daily! I'm glad you are here.

What worked during your two months of sobriety? What causes your relapses? For me, sobriety has been successful with a lot of understanding as to "why" I do certain things, and what makes me feel certain ways.

I get the "F-Its" and it causes me to go to the nearest alcohol because in that brief moment, I don't care. I've learned to prevent those feelings.

Keep posting here, I wouldn't be sober if I hadn't found this place. Take it seriously, post often, read a lot.

You can do this.

Welcome, Amin!

You'll find plenty of people who understand here.

What caused you to start drinking again after 2 months? Sometimes it's habit, pressure, problems dealing with emotions.

I had to learn new ways of living to be able to stay sober for the long term.

It's great that you're stopping so young and that you realized you had a problem!

Wishing you all the best.

Welcome Amin! You're in the right place; a place where we are in no position to judge your past drinking because we have been there and still struggle. However, it is very hard to quit on one's own. I also invite you to join the January 2019 group. It's a great group of people. I have 22 days and my first three weeks was on SR almost as many hours as I was awake. I also listened to podcasts, wrote daily in a journal, and meditated. You can do it one day at a time!

Welcome to SR, you will get a lot of support here.

You might also consider some face to face support, like AA.

I resisted that for several years and then when I finally gave in and tried it, I was glad I did. The combination of AA and this website is what helped me get sober.

Hi Amin, I’m really glad you found SR! You’ve gotten through the first step which is recognizing you have a problem with alcohol. You are not alone. My drinking also progressively worsened when I was escaping from emotional pain. Then it got to be a bad habit and a big problem.

I had to work on changing myself to stay sober and fight urges. Many join AA, and that is always an option. I started going to therapy to get to the root of my problem and work on better coping skills. I had to break up with so,e of my friends, at least for a while, some of them permanently. I started many new healthy habits including yoga, meditation, exercise, journaling, checking in here to SR. I also practice gratitude every day and it has helped me so much to change my perspective on my life.

You are so young! The time to stop permanently is now. You can do it! Life is so much better sober.

Hope to see more of you here.
