An old drinking buddy stopped by on his way across the country. I had blocked his phone number but he still knew where I worked. He showed up at lunch unannounced. Of course, he wanted to party that night and wanted to know if I got his voice mails. I got them of course, but never responded. I did not know what to do. I explained that I was busy that night and did not want to go drinking. He left angry at me, and I doubt I will ever see him again. But the truth was I did not want to enable him anymore. He drinks constantly and I knew that if I gave in and drank with him like old times it would be a disaster for me. But it was troubling. He left, I went to dinner, did not drink, and was at work this morning with no hangover. But I was scared, because he represented a past that I am trying to escape. Glad I could come here and post and vent a bit. Thanks SR.

You knew where it would go with your friend, and you didn’t cave.
So congrats!
Lots of folks here have come to see who were friends and who were drinking buddies after they quit.
I would say you have lost a drinking buddy, not a friend.
