For Those In Early Recovery and Are Big Sports Fans

When your team loses, does it spur your AV? My Texas Longhorns got beat today. By a team it was supposed to beat by 14 points. I was so damn angry. All J could think about was having a drink. Seriously. I am not going to, though. I’m going to the gym to work of my anger. Geez, this is kind of sad. I need a new hobby, than to care about how a bunch of 18-22 year old boys play football. Ugh.

No, and it's a good thing. My Cowboys look like a bunch of 5 year old girls out there!

To be completely honest I wanted a drink if they lost or if they won.

Either way was an excuse for a drink for me. My team had a comeback yesterday against a team they were supposed to beat (Michigan St.). Those tense games were an excuse to drink as were the blow outs.

I drank on every occasion, everything made me want to drink. Getting a grip on that gut instinct to just grab a drink took me quite some time.

I drank for almost any reason.

Its good you're aware of your triggers and you have some strategies in place to try and deal with them...

what else are you doing for your recovery Horn?

Thanks Dee. I am in an OP recovery program. Have a therapist, and AA. And exercising as much as I can.

I was definitely the drink when I'm upset, happy, sad, it's Tuesday... kind of person. I have found that life, even the days that throw unexpected and overwhelming curveballs, is much better sober.

Have they given you any strategies in outpatient for trigger situations? Have you tried mindfulness? It can help.

For me, my team losing was just another excuse to drink.

Now that I've been sober for some time I've noticed my attitude towards sports has changed: I still follow my favorite teams, but I don't care that much about their results anymore, I just want to see good games.
