Hi all, I have joined today as the start of my journey. I have been a heavy drinker for around 20 years now, I would consider myself a high functioning alcoholic I've never lost a job, relationship or even had my problem found out by anyone.
I have today had a health scare and decided it is time to make some positive action with this issue. I have suffered with anxiety for a few years now and in a way have used alcohol as a coping mechanism.
I have quite a few symptoms on the go right now both physical and mental and I am hoping to hear back from my blood tests in the next 24-48 hours but I've been Googling my symptoms which as we all know only brings up the worst possible cases!!!
I am not sure what I am looking for from this forum but I guess it will really is just some mental support as I'm not interested in going to a physical support group.
Anyway, thanks for reading and hope it all makes sense!

Welcome and I'm glad you found us.
It's good that you talked to your doctor and I hope your symptoms clear up. Many of us here have used alcohol to self-medicate anxiety. I think you can find lots of healthy ways to manage anxiety.

Welcome Tiverjoe,
You have taken the first step by addressing the fact you have a problem and by posting on here. As for what to expect here that’s down to you. Personally I come here when I’m tempted to drink and read my own and other people’s posts. I would say the most important thing is to come here everyday as I find the more sober time I have the less likely I am to come on here and that’s when I have started drinking again on previous attempts.
Hope your medical stuff comes back ok.

There's plenty of encouragement to be found here. I drank 30 yrs. & was so reluctant to let go of it. I have no idea why I thought it did anything to enhance my life. It'll be so good to get free of it. You can do it.
