Fun at the park.
So I've pretty much integrated back into doing things I would normally do when I was drinking in terms of social activities. I can handle a barbecue or an early happy hour. I don't go to parties and I avoid wedding receptions and other heavy drinking activities.
So this weekend we went to a park on the lake with a couple to cook fish over an open fire. When cooking outdoor the duties always fall to me which is fine. So we are people watching and this family come down the walkway and its what I assume are husband wife and 3 teenagers and another adult. All adults seemed to be under the influence a little, but the father was carrying a cooler, tripped over his own feet, somersaulted forward and ended up flat on his back. The guy didn't move for 10 minutes. He was so drunk I don't think he knew where he was. Finally some members of his family picked him up and brought them to their spot. I few years ago I would have thought that was funny. I didn't find it funny.

After I stopped drinking, I became far more aware of how much alcohol imbibing is going on around me.
Less so now, but we were at dinner the other night at a local pizza and parm restaurant, and I noticed that the guy with his family across from us knocked back three rum and cokes in like, 25 minutes.
That seemed like a lot to me.

When you're also drunk I agree it seems funny, witnessing such actions sober is another thing completely... Today I bumped into some of my old drinking buddies who had been drinking all day as usual, being sober in that conversation was like standing with a bunch of demented strangers, don't get me wrong, they're great friends to me but when you're on a completely different wavelength it's unbearable and a touch cringeworthy.

Yes, I shudder at incidents like that because I know that guy was me not all that long ago. Our whole family went to a nice lake/picnic area on the 4th of july and there were plenty of those folks around making fools of themselves in front of their families. Perception is everything, right?
I tend to notice both ends of the drinking spectrum now that I'm sober. I notice the sad man my age in a suit at 9am with a beer can in a plastic bag on the train with me, while I also notice my friends who, even with an open bottle of wine at dinner, choose to have less than 1/2 a glass each.
In the end the ugly drunk was closer to how I behaved than anyone else. So although I don't find it funny, I do empathize with the suffering he must be enduring, still giving in to his demons.

I'm really fortunate that my drinking career occurred before the age of cell phone cameras.
I shudder to think what pictures or videos of me might have ended up on social media.

gawd, he didn't spill the beer did he??? kidding.
and they just left him there for a good ten minutes..........either they know the drill and have seen this maneuver before, or they really didn't care if he in fact hurt himself. sad.

I have a mixture of feelings when I see things like that. I feel bad for the person and his family, because I know there's a good chance it's a common occurrence, and the guy needs help. Strangely, I also feel a bit angry at the person for exposing his kids to that, even though lord knows I exposed my own kids to stuff like that on occasion. And I feel relief that I'm not "that person" anymore.
We who have, or had the same problems can empathise to some degree but I can see why to non heavy drinkers we do not always cut the most sympathetic figure.
What a sad experience for the family. I worry about the teenagers who will soon have some tough decisions to make in their own lives.
I recently heard that more Disney Parks will soon be serving alcohol. I am not fond that decision

far be it for me to judge anyone, I have no issue with people getting drunk. But this particular case was kind of sad. Someone should have told pops to sit this one out and stay home and sleep it off.
