I am nearly one year alcohol free now. I still have very vivid, sometimes scary dreams. Whilst drinking I don't remember having dreams at all. Sometimes I wake up and feel quite shaken by the dreams, even to the point where I am scared to face the day. But once I get up that anxiety goes away. I guess what I'm saying is, for me at least, this wild dreaming is part of recovery. They can't hurt you.
Hi chicosgirl
I'm sorry you had a nightmare - I had some pretty vivid ones my first year but they got less and less upsetting over time..
The good thing about SoberRecovery is there's always someone around

Hi Chicosgirl,
I’m 40 days sober and have been having very vivid dreams, as well as nightmares, pretty regularly since I stopped drinking.
When I have a really scary nightmare, I get up and watch tv, read a book, pet the dog, anything to get me out of my bed and to calm myself down. Maybe that could be helpful for you?

I've been struggling with bad nightmares for pretty much all my life already. There's not much you can do to prevent them I guess but it helps me to just get up and get going or to meditate, read something, listen to an audiobook. Just something to distract me and after a while the fear and anxiety usually pass.

I had 87 days sober recently relapsed and I am determined to quit for good , going to AA now started yesterday went with a friend. I remember during the 87 days sober I had vivid dreams and an occasional nightmare . Are these part of being an alcoholic? I remember my uncle telling stories of drunken nightmares , he told a story once about them and referred to them as a visit from the whiskey goblins.
