Walking in the woods
Walking in the woods
I live in an area with a lot of outdoor recreation, and as the title suggests, I went for a walk out in the woods today. A few miles, a straightforward day hike, but most importantly, the same hike I did a few months before I sobered up. That experience back in 2016 was kind of revealing, really — excessive sweating, weird heartrate/cardio stuff ... I realized that day that alcohol had begun to kill me.
Todays' experience was completely opposite. Not only was it a beautiful day to be out, I handled it in good form, thanks to being almost 18 months sober and 35 pounds lighter.
I'd be lying if I said I returned from that excursion in 2016 and immediately quit drinking — in reality, it drug on for many months afterwards. But it was the beginning of the end, I think, and I'm grateful for that.
There's an aphorism about trees that goes "the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now." So maybe you've missed the "right" time to quit, but how about now?
