Is Drinking Coffee bad in Early Sobriety?
I am 52 days sober. Is drinking 4-6 cups of black coffee bad for you in early recovery?
I have been feeling depressed, uncertain about the future.
Coffee seems to help a little bit with depression.
What are your thoughts?

No medical advice, just personal experience. I love it and read a ton about its connection to liver repair! I would advise checking in with your doctor on amounts right for you. If you are drinking 4-6 cups, are they all in one time of the day, spaced out, empty stomach or with food? All those will be factors in the impact of caffeine. I don't have depression issues that I am aware of, so I have no comment there. It does wake me up in the morning so I enjoy those effects and stay away from them in the evening. Too much makes me shaky and anxious so I need to draw a line at 3 big cups.
Alcohol addiction is really a defect in our dopamine, or pleasure center in our brains. It is very natural to try to find other things to stimulate dopamine release once we quit drinking. That's why many folks in AA and in recovery in general drink tons of coffee and chain smoke. Coffee isn't going to kill you. Drinking will. I became a sugar junkie when I quit. I knew I could lose weight later. Baby steps.
Congrats on 52 days!

most all it seems in Recovery drink coffee
just seeing this post is sending me for yet another cup
although we need to be careful -- coffee can make one very anxious
in early Recovery coffee and sugar seem to be (almost) needed
a little coffee they say is good for the heart???
and too much they say is not???

Personally, I am not giving up my morning coffee (2 or sometimes 3 cups between 6am-11am). It gets me going and I do not feel any negative side effects.
My main and only goal right now is to NOT drink alcoholic beverages.

Coffee contains caffeine, which is a stimulant and can cause anxiety and rapid heartbeat in some. There are studies that show health benefits in moderation, but I wouldn't recommend chugging it all day long. As long as you feel ok with a few cups, I don't see a need to worry about it. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/607381001
When I stopped meth, I drank probably a pot or more a day.
When I stopped alcohol, I really wasn't into coffee as much, I drink an all natural pre workout 2 times a day. 1 time a day is recommended, OPS I am such a rebel
I think I get maybe 1 coffee a week, but it is a LARGE so maybe like 24 oz.
I feel fine with the amount of caffeine I have, no irregular heartbeat, no anxiety, or weird feelings.
Anything can kill a person. - Moderation and helmets help
Do what feels right for your body, only you can know how you are feeling.

Hi
I drink about 10 cups a day however I have a fraction of a spoon of instant coffee appx a quarter so equivalent 2 to three cups by normal person coffee standards and my weak coffee is spaced through the day. I admit that I am a bit of an addict.
On the other hand I went out recently for a coffee at a coffee shop and ended up having 2 back to back. Big mistake I felt sick for hours with cafene overload.
I think I will start to cut down or alternatively try to have tea more often after all I am British😁

Hey Spring--52 days is awesome and I don't see anything wrong with the caffeine intake. It seems to be a thing in recovery to drink lots of coffee but at the last inpatient rehab I attended they only served decaf, which to me was a little much! I only drink a cup a day now.
Sure. Coffee is good.
But don't drink too much of it when early recovering.
Then it just puts extra stress on your unbalanced brain and can worsen feelings of anxiety, stress etc.
If you have/get that while recovering.

My thoughts on the place of coffee in my life:
I have a coffee machine. It was the first thing I bought when I moved back to Australia. Even before my microwave oven.
I don't cook. I have nothing in my fridge. But I have 3 packets of coffee beans in case I run out.
I'm environmentally responsible. So I own 3 reusable coffee cups. One for my home, one for my car, one for my office.
Now I think I need another cup of coffee. It's 7 am here and I've been up an hour.
