Day 6: replacing the drink in drinking
Starting Day 6 with healthy breakfast, stretching, meditation, gratitudes and posting here.
I was reflecting on the idea of taking action to stay sober. Drinking is an action I’m taking in response to a trigger: a thought or a feeling. So then I thought: what other “Ings” can I put in my sober toolkit and use instead?
Breathing deeply
Hydrating
Urge surfing
Eating
Meditating
Posting here
Talking to a friend or AA member
Walking
....what ings are in your sober toolkit?

At the moment I'm focusing on:
Caring...both for myself and for my kids. Things I'd neglected for too long are getting addressed. I have a (very overdue) GP appointment tomorrow which I've been putting off for probably a year or so. I did a big clothes shop for myself and the kids today. Boy is it nice to JUST DO IT without thinking about the financial implications. I would easily have been spending $50-100/week on booze...so at 53 days sober I have a bit of spare cash up my sleeve.
Organising...my house and my life. Making sure bills are paid. Slowly chipping away at the things around the house which have been neglected during heavy drinking periods.
Congrats on 6 days! Keep going

In no particular order
Praying
Morning recovery/study/devotional routine (5 things)
Yoga-ing
Cooking dinner/making lunch for my husband (I love doing this)
Meetings (my AA and also for the recovery group I run that is for the restaurant industry)
Working
Reading memoirs/stories of recovery, life changes, non-fiction (Brene Brown and the like)
Napping
All -ings are possible once drink-ing is off the table.

Being only 11 days in I have been concentrating so far on the basic ings
Getting up early at the same time each day
Showering, brushing my teeth and getting dressed within 10 minutes of getting up (otherwise had a tendency to sit in my pj's and not bother)
Eating within an hour of getting up
Going to bed by 10pm each night
Listen to meditation music when I get into bed
Not putting TV on unless I specifically want to watch something
Eating 3 times a day, no processed food
Looking through recipe books for inspiration on what to cook tomorrow
Leaving the house everyday
Swimming
Walking
Organising my home and cleaning
Starting a job, and finishing no matter how much I want to give up
Daily visits and posts on SR
Next week I am going to add some more social activity, that is where my angst is mostly as I am desperately unconfident around people. I might do a baking class or join one on the walking groups for a day for a nice walk.
