Welcome to the forum, Verytruly. I think most of us feel that way when we first join. I can't give you a lot of advice as I'm in early recovery myself (47 days), but I'm sure some other wise members will be around soon to help out.

The one thing which really helps me, is taking it one day at a time. Committing to 24 hours sober each day, staying busy, going to bed sober, wake up the next morning and repeat. If you're having a bad day and 24 hours seems impossible, break it down even further and just commit to staying sober for one hour. Keep busy. Repeat. Even after 47 days the thought of staying sober FOREVER is incredibly daunting...but one day? I CAN do that.

Keep posting. SR is a great place to be.

Hi Yourstruly and good on you for taking that first step! It took me weeks of browsing to get the courage up to post here but it was the best thing I have done for myself in years. The support and advice from the SR community has really kept me focused and I couldn't thank everyone here enough. I am only on Day 5 so I can't offer too much advice yet but as time2shine says, if you need to go hour to hour rather than day to day then do that.

You can do this, it is possible and you are not alone!

Most, probably all, of us found this place because of the same issue, however it is framed - we could not live without giving in to the addiction.

There's so much support and wisdom here, I've found it over the years.

One thing I was often asked, and it used to frustrate me, but I see the value in it now, years later, is - Do you have a plan?

So, do you have a plan?

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Have you thought about a treatment facility if you are unable to do it on your own? Wish you the best.

Verytruly - it's so good to meet you.

I felt just the same when I first came to SR. I was Googling 'health issues of heavy drinkers' when I was led to a post here. I wasn't intending to quit all together, just wanted to control my drinking. Like you, I was afraid to let go of it - it had been part of everything I did for many years. As I read the posts here, I learned so much. I realized I would never be able to manage my drinking, that quitting was the only was to get free from my miserable existence. I knew I would never be alone again - everyone here understood what I was going through. I hope you will feel the same - you can get free, and have a whole new life. Welcome!

Welcome, Verytruly!

I felt the exact same way. I had hit my bottom when I realized I couldn't live with alcohol anymore but had no idea how I would ever live without it.

There is a solution! Stick around here and you'll get a lot of information on how to get the help you need to recover along with support to do that.

Welcome to the family. When I quit I didn't know what I'd do if I wasn't drinking. I had to take a leap of faith and hope it would get better. (it did)

I hope our support can help you get sober for good.
