Robots

I was sorry to hear of the death in the US of a pedestrian run down by a driverless car. Globally a nuclear holocaust seems more likely than ever and drones start to fill our skies. Years ago I recall a philosopher (Daniel Dennett) concerned over 'computer rights". As drinkers we may opt for a locking device on our car ignition. So much for self esteem.

Here in Australia computer technology seems far from blissful and I don't consider myself a luddite. Should we all, perhaps, be taking stock prior to those friendly robots taking over completely???

Yes.
I kind of think we should.

It's going to be a while though, and no idea if the planet will survive that long, so I don't worry about these things. I know they matter, they matter a great deal, but I can only worry about what I can do today, tomorrow and so on.

But oy, not good. Really not good. ♥

Sure! We have enough on our plates keeping sober.
Worrying too much about existential stuff may not be a good idea.
Still, I woke early and thought I'd get that issue off my mind.

I also have concerns regarding the capabilities of robots and other Artificial Intelligence machines..... because they appear to be becoming increasingly non-artificial. If that capability was placed in a strong mechanical body, we would have no defence. There’s talk of robot policing, I can’t think of anything worse, no judgement, no discretion, no empathy, just pre-programming....

Yep! We really need to guard against that sort of stuff driving us to drink, which is never the answer.

Yes. And no one seems to mind.... I mind.

You could call this social media, but it isn't.
We bond over something that is life altering, life ending.
And care for each other.
That seems to be the exact opposite of what happens on social media.

But the enslavement....oh.....even my lovely husband has had an earful from me re glancing at his phone and even texting while he is in a conversation with me...I will not be one of the mindbots you see in movies who are both on phones texting etc while on a date.

I grew up reading Brave New World and we were afraid.
Now it's happening and few people seem bothered.

That was good ol' humans.

Robots? What about FB and the Cambridge Analytica scandal? That's crazy! Using psyops on the public.

I have to read up on the FB debacle....

...OK, I read. Zero clue how or why anyone is surprised they use the data.

I don’t FB, but I would find it hard to believe that my interwebbering in all other fashions isn’t being noted bundled and sold. Especially given the ads that show on my satellite television highly customizable service, the one owned now by ATT.
I doubt the general public sees as many recovery commercials as I do ,lol.

The Guardian have been onto that for some time, BJ. So I'm not as surprised as some.
My take on it is, what do people expect when they get their news from social networks?

Yeah I read the old stories about it on The Guardian, I wish it had gotten more coverage, or at least that I'd read more about it, back then.

This is my take on it. I deleted my FB account awhile ago because I felt like my privacy was being invaded. After this scandal I've also deleted my Google account, so now my phone keeps sending me messages that my data isn't being backed up..... Exactly. That's what I wanted. What these companies are doing is surveillance on us so these rich fat basta*rds can take our money, and control our minds to get us to vote in who they want, so they can further their agenda's of keeping us compliant and consuming. It's everything Orwell warned us against. And we agree to it when we agree to the terms of service to use their services. I don't agree and I'm not going to use Google or FB again. I don't want them all up in my business, especially on my phone. When I had the FB app on my phone I would take a picture and moments later FB would be asking me if I want to share it. FB and apps like it are designed to addict people, it's meant to get you to spend hours on it and focus your consciousness on it, and the people using that data don't have benign intentions. The system is only going to change if it costs these companies money or power, that's all they respect.

when I got into early sobriety this time around I did some 12-Step meetings whilst I was looking around for alternatives. I did the usual thing - got some other members' phone numbers & put them in my phone. FB then presumably got their numbers out of my contacts list & suggested them as friends, complete with surnames! so much for anonymity
