Holy smokes, do I =

What an amazing way to look at it, in black and white.

DSM-5

Scoring for symptoms 1 through 11

The presence of at least 2 of these symptoms indicates an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).

The severity of the AUD is defined as:

Mild: The presence of 2 to 3 symptoms

Moderate: The presence of 4 to 5 symptoms

Severe: The presence of 6 or more symptoms

In the past year, have you:

1
Had times when you ended up drinking more, or longer, than you intended?

2
More than once wanted to cut down or stop drinking, or tried to, but couldn't?

3
A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain alcohol, use alcohol, or recover from its effects. (See DSM-IV, criterion 9.)

4
Spent a lot of time drinking? Or being sick or getting over other aftereffects?
**This is new to DSM-5**

5
Found that drinking—or being sick from drinking—often interfered with taking care of your home or family? Or caused job troubles? Or school problems?

6
Continued to drink even though it was causing trouble with your family or friends?
7
Given up or cut back on activities that were important or interesting to you, or gave you pleasure, in order to drink?

8
More than once gotten into situations while or after drinking that increased your chances of getting hurt (such as driving, swimming, using machinery, walking in a dangerous area, or having unsafe sex)?

9
Continued to drink even though it was making you feel depressed or anxious or adding to another health problem? Or after having had a memory blackout?

10
Had to drink much more than you once did to get the effect you want? Or found that your usual number of drinks had much less effect than before?

11
Found that when the effects of alcohol were wearing off, you had withdrawal symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, shakiness, restlessness, nausea, sweating, a racing heart, or a seizure? Or sensed things that were not there?

Here’s a transcript of my mind while reading that list:

Check.
Check.
Check.
Check.
O hell yes check.
Checkcheckcheckcheckcheck....

And yet I still catch myself questioning sometimes....

I really appreciate the quality of content you bring. 11/10.

They should create a category for Untreated Alcoholism. I would probably check all the criteria for that just as I did for AUD on DSM-V.

Seeing the DSM diagnosis is just amazing. I think about the people I know who I sometimes (FOOLISHLY) compare myself to, like my wife, and say, Oh I can be a drinker like her. Just enjoy some Malbec now and then...

Then I think of her answering seeing if she has any of these symptoms - and realizing she MAYBE would check one - that she drank too much on an occasion but none of the other symptoms would apply to her.

We booze abusers are truly different than the take-it-or-leave-its.

And Dee - thank you for everything you do on this site. So greatly appreciated.

Oh dear, I tick them all. No escaping the black and white reality. Maybe I should print this list off for the days when I think that maybe I am not quite so bad..... sigh

Great post. I certainly should have answered yes to all of them a long time ago. The sad truth is that I was in denial for far too long and would of answered no just so I could continue down the drunken path.

Great post, thanks.

Everything but 6. I kept close relationships out of it mostly so I could continue to drink without being bothered.
