How I Got Good at Sober Living

Practice.

Sounds like I'm being a smart ass, but I'm not. How else do you get better at something? Anything? For example, I want to be able to do more pull ups and push ups - how am I going to get better at doing pull ups and push ups?

I'm going to practice doing pull ups and push ups.

When I was one year old I wanted to learn how to walk. You know how I learned?
I practiced.
I wasn't good at it at first. I fell on my face. I got back up and tried again. I practiced and practiced and practiced until I could do it without even thinking about it.

When I was 5 I wanted to ride a bike. You know how I got good at riding a bike?

Wait for it...

I practiced.

Five years ago I wanted to learn how to live a happy sober life. At first I thought I was going to quit drinking on Monday and have a happy sober life by Tuesday afternoon. Maybe Wednesday at the latest.

It didn't work like that. I fell on my face. I got discouraged. I felt like giving up.

But I didn't.
I practiced.

I'm still practicing. Because that's how you get good at stuff. You practice doing it.

Best of Luck on Your Journey.

I agree. My only fear is that something really bad does not happen until I finally get it.

That's why you are practicing now. Just as walking or riding a bike, you will get steadier and more confident.

If you fall on your face, you incorporate a new and better technique into your practice!

Top post Non!!

For me the many "occasions" throughout the year needed some practice . . . Sober Xmas, Sober New Years, Sober Birthday . . . birthdays, weddings, funerals, engagements, the list goes on . . . but it all comes with practice over the years.

. . . and my personal favourite, a Sober Irish man on St Patrick's day . . . now there's a concept!!
