What makes you feel grateful about being sober?

I've been clean for 43 days. It's not easy but I really am grateful for all the positives that have come out of sobriety. And today, I need to remind myself of those positives. Friday today and my housemates are already making their plans for tonight. We had mid semester exams this week and most of us are done. So now it's playtime (which means drinking until you black out for most around here).

I gotta say, I'm kind of envious (I know, I know!). But I'm reminding myself of everything I have gained from sobriety. And how hard I have worked over these 43 days and how I shouldn't mess that up over one night.

So I made a list of why I am grateful to be sober. Here are some of the reasons:

- improved grades at university
- no self-loathing and shame
- no constant mental torture as I think about "how I went wrong."
- reengaging with hobbies and passions I discarded because of booze
- being healthier
- putting my parents' minds and hearts at ease
-no drama from the night before
-no putting myself in undesirable and dangerous positions
- no dreading to check my bank balance after I pillaged my funds the night before
-feeling happy and optimistic again
-feeling human again

This are just some for me. What about you guys? x

Knowing that I won't wake up with a blank 7 hours, looking around the house trying to find some clues and knowing you had a massive fight with your bf but not having an idea of who started it or what happened cause you were in blackout...

Many things.

One that I am thankful for is being sober when my daughters were in high school. If they texted me to come pick them up from a party or something, when they they were uncomfortable, I was available.

Texting back, "sorry you are on your own, I'm too drunk to drive" would have been awful.

Great stuff here. For me, I'm grateful that I'm not so irritable with my wife and kids. I definitely feel more even keeled and level headed in the last few month.

So grateful to not have the stress, anxiety, fear and shame that came with hiding my drinking Trying to remember details, and avoiding my responsibilities and feelings.... don’t miss that either. I can literally breath easier without all the baggage that came with drinking.

I am most thankful that sobriety has allowed me to be myself again. Alcohol turned me into someone who I don't even know or like.

I'm grateful that being brought up by a family of alcoholics some dead, ill, in prison, I have the strength to break the cycle . I can live a normal life without the poison .
I'm grateful I still have a good job and can do it better sober.
I'm grateful I am still healthy and not looking like some of my poor family destroyed by booze.
I'm grateful that I don't want to drink today.
I found this group.
My partner has stuck by me and now I can give back all he truly deserves.
So many reasons like you. Keep going find a new reason everyday. 😊

Grateful to have spent the time and effort to solve many lingering life/financial issues...
...and not to be creating new ones due to procrastination or bad judgment
got some bad people out of my work life
feeling enthusiastic about my personal and professional goals again
not feeling like life is something I have to "get through"--actually looking forward to the experience
eliminated most of what I thought of as life's comforts and now feeling better because of it

I am grateful that I do not have to visit the ER, vomiting blood or with heart and organ issue,s.So I am grateful that by the grace of God for my sobriety and that I am still alive. I am also grateful that I have no police interaction due to alcohol arrests I sure do not miss the drunk tank that waking up knowing another court case is looming. I am grateful for all the blessings and strength that God has provided me with to help me recover.I could write a book but will leave it at that.

Aside from all of the responses and good reasons already mentioned, if I had to pick only one thing I'm grateful for, it is that I'm no longer a drunk, and people new in my life never knew me as a drunk.

I can relate to so many of these! But to add one I’d say: having my memory back. I was at the point where past timelines, planned meetings, conversations, dates...were all fuzzy. I was around a family member who has early onset Alzheimer’s recently and thought ‘I can relate to you.’ I’m only 6 days in but I feel like I can THINK again. 🎉
