1 Year Sober Today :)
1 Year Sober Today :)
It's been a rough year for sure but I'm feeling a lot better these days. I know I still have a lot more ground to cover. The first year was pretty much just focusing on not drinking, this second year will be focusing on figuring out who that guy I've been hiding from actually is.
I've had three relapses after two months and those lead to worsening withdrawals but now I've made it a year. Those two month stints made me realize exactly how long 60 days actually is.
It was really really hard at first, the first six months were complete hell for me. After 7 months I was able to notice that things were settling down. I had a bad bout of PAWS with brain fog and mood swings across the spectrum. I'm still getting waves of it and last week was hard for some reason, probably due to a lot of reflecting on the changes that have occured over the last year. But it's no longer overwhelming me and I'm feeling a lot more clear and level headed these days.
SR has been my only recover support, thank you everyone! I did read a lot of the RR AVRT stuff. I've never been to any meeting, I don't get enough time at home and going to some group thing is just going to take me away from where I want to be. I did read most of the BB and found it helpful during the 4-6 month period where I wasn't sure if I'd make it.
This Bob Dylan verse has been going through my head today so I thought I'd share:

Oh, the hours I've spent inside the Coliseum
Dodging lions and wastin' time
Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle
I can hardly stand to see 'em
Well, it sure has been a long hard ride
Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory
When I ran on the hilltop following a pack of wild geese
Someday, life will be sweet like a rhapsody
When I paint my masterpiece
Dodging lions and wastin' time
Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle
I can hardly stand to see 'em
Well, it sure has been a long hard ride
Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory
When I ran on the hilltop following a pack of wild geese
Someday, life will be sweet like a rhapsody
When I paint my masterpiece

Fantastic.....really well done!
Also, thanks for describing how hard those first six months were....I think that will be really helpful to those of us for whom the early days are so tough.
I wish you a wonderful year 2!

Thanks everyone! I really is empowering to know I've been able to make it this far. Alternating between happiness and tears today, looking back at that struggle it feels good to have made it so far.
What a wonderfully inspiring post. A year sounds like such a long time right now (5 weeks under my belt) but when i read posts like yours well it makes it real and more concrete. Well done and congratulations.
I know that feeling, it is a long time. Seems like when you get older the years go by faster and faster, last year was a long one for me. Well worth it though, things will only get better from here.
