Resting Heart Rate
Resting Heart Rate
I'm still new in sobriety after a relapse of a couple of years. However, in these 10 days I saw an improvement in myself which pleased me. I have a Fitbit which records heart rate, to include average resting heart rate. Anyway, my resting heart rate has decreased incrementally from 80 on the first day of sobriety to (78,77, 75, 73, 71, 68, 65, 64, 64, 64). Maybe it will decrease further as I'm still experiencing significant anxiety and fitful sleep.

That's great!
Mine dropped quite a bit as well along with my bp.
When I quit my heart rate was in the 80's and my bp was 160/100. After a year it is down to 68-72 and 115/75ish.
I think that is proof positive on how hard alcohol is on you.

I have a B/P monitor at home as well. Been too scared to take it. It's always been in sync with Dr.'s...So I just did it
122/82 pulse 88. I'm STUNNED my pulse has NEVER been under 100 for ten years. I only quit on Dec 26th.
Thanks for the idea. I'm a happy girl today!

This is an area that I have enjoyed watching the improvement. I also had a machine at home and it would always show "error", so I threw it away. I had to go to a local Doc in a Box for a URI, and found out why it was showing an error, my BP was something like 220 over 110, wholly crap, I could have had a stroke, any way they freaked, did a cardiogram, put me on BP meds, didn't stop me though. Kept drinking, One night I was laying in bed with my heart jumping all over my chest, pounding into my throat, I should have went to the ER it was that bad, I stupidly stubbornly didn't go because that would mean telling my husband that I was hiding and drinking so I just laid there praying not to die, convinced that I had finally killed myself with my drinking. than the light finally lit up over my head, I stopped drinking, lost 30 lbs and I am now in the 126/90 range, resting hrt rate mid 60's still clinically high, but I will take it.

Thanks for this. My heart rate was in the 100’s, and BP something like 165/100 when my withdrawal landed me in the ER for a managed detox (never go cold turkey from booze without medical oversight!). Last visit I was down to 85 and 130/80.
And that was after like 7 months of sobriety and healthy living! I’m glad to hear it’s getting better for you quickly, and grateful to hear stories from others who’ve had a long row to hoe. It’s nice to take a minute and NOT notice my heart thumping!

I've been in the ER many times after binge drinking, with my heart rate in the 120's - 130's.
Withdrawal + dehydration will make one tachycardic every time.
My stats are much better not drinking. Even after only a week away from alcohol I have seen them improve in the past.

I've also got a fitbit and my heart rate has dropped to low 50s from low 60s, after a few days off the alcohol. It's a nice little reminder that my body is repairing (or hopefully is). I've also gone from getting about 30 mins deep sleep to 1.5 hrs!
good job

My heart rate is typically 45 - 50 bpm.; my BP depends on the situation. If I’m at my physicians office it is typically 140/90. If I’m at home then it’s generally in the 115-125 over 70-80. My BP has come down since I quit drinking my heart rate has always been low.
This is lower than most Olympic athletes. Are you an athlete or is there some kind of heart condition causing this? Bradycardia comes to mind. I am not doubting you at all btw, just curious.

Hi I posted earlier on my thread about waking up with a sober heart rate.
My rate is 48 to 52 when I'm well and over 100 when I'm drinking.
I'm fit and healthy just alwAys had a slow heart rate.
So when I'm acting out and drinking in my addiction which is in my past now
I get really really unsettled when my ticker is banging away.
Upon waking up after them awful nights it's like ive been sleeping but not resting.
I never will allow myself to go there again.
That misery is most definitely optional!

At 80 years old, I’m hardly an athlete. I do stay in shape. But, my low heart rate is partly genetic and partly fitness. My mother and sister both had low resting heart rates so it seems to run in the family. I don’t have any heart problems and have a measured maximum heart rate of nearly 160. I seldom get there but often reach 80 % of MHR while I am exercising. I’m probably just a little odd.
