148 days sober
I am about to hit 5 months totally sober. I am super happy with myself and the progress I am making. I went through a very painful divorce last year which triggered my drinking. For my first 2 months of sobriety, I attended Celebrate Recovery and a step study at my church. The leader of the small group became my temporary sponsor and she doesn't agree with how I am doing my recovery. She doesn't like that having a job I am accountable for and school is helping me with my recovery, she said she did it and relapsed. I feel everyone is different and she feels it is her way or the highway. I appreciate suggestions all around but she is trying to use the fear approach and also doesn't agree with my getting a counselor to talk about my divorce. I am more of a one on one counseling person to talk about my feelings, but I do attend meetings. Needless to say I know I need a new sponsor. I just feel everyone has their own journey in recovery and what I have been doing must be working if I have been sober 5 months.
Congrats on 5 months XtinaM82
Kinda of hard for any of us to critique your sponsor without out knowing what her concerns are specifically.
You should know better than us what works for you I think

Do what works for you. We are all unique human beings. What works for your sponsor might not work for you, what works for you might not work for me etc. That's a mistake I made these past couple months trying to get sober so keep doing what you are doing and follow your own path to success..
Like Dee said I don't want to judge your sponsor too much because I don't know her. But personally I'd also start looking for another sponsor. She shouldn't be acting like her way is the only way to stay sober. Many people have remained sober by using tactics different than her or me and lived happy sober lives. You know the situation better than me though.

Thank you for your response!
Congratulations.
Agree with least that a sponsor is not a life counselor.
Sponsors help us through the steps, and, hopefully, are helpful if we get shaky.
Everyone’s recovery path is different.
You are certainly doing something right.
Congrats on 5 months.
