Please Help

I'm 23 and I've been abusing alcohol for about four years. In college I would regularly binge drink on the weekend, once ended up in the hospital and once ended up in jail (public intoxication.)

Now that I'm out of college it's gotten out of control. After a night of drinking I experience withdrawal symptoms, shakiness, and cravings are so bad that I usually cave. I can't go anywhere without thinking, "where can I get alcohol here?" Even if I throw away all the alcohol in my house I still find myself walking to the liquor store to get more.

This is really hard. Please offer advice about how you got through this

Welcome to Sober Recovery. You will find alot of support here from people who have been where you are right now. You seem to know that your drinking has become a problem and that if you don't quit it will only get progressively worse. Do you understand alcoholism and addiction? Have you ever detoxed? It would be good to seek medical help. If you find yourself walking to a liquor store why not change course and walk to an AA meeting.

I mean I'm not going to the ER because I'm not experiencing withdrawal symptoms NOW. I just went to the gym, ate breakfast and I feel fine. It's just that if I DO drink, I know that I will. So really I just need advice on how to stay away

Welcome. You found a great resource here on SR.

#1 OK .. You know there's a problem and have admitted it ...
This is excellent!

But YOU need to WANT to QUIT.

YOU are the one that can make this happen...
No magic.

Did deep.. What do you want?

Wanna get sober?

DIG in... DETox takes a few days. Gotta clean out the system.... Then the mind will follow.

This is not a game.....

Take a couple days in bed. Put on some movies and ride it out. Tell everyone you got the flu. Drink lots of water and some Gatorade if you like and have some cans of soup and crackers in house. (gotta eat)..

This alcoholism is a sickness.. Treat it like one. Get sober (better).

Like they say... It's 1 day at a time.

Get a pad of paper and make a plan... WHAT will you do the next time you crave? Write down reasons why you wanna be sober. Read them... Reinforce the reasons.

Get sober and life will be better! I promise you 100%.

Just don't drink today. One day at a time.
When you get up tomorrow make it plan not to drink.
Sign in the 24 hour thread and be accountable.
You may want to join the Class of Dec.2017 for more support.

Why not look up the AA meetings in your area so you can meet some others who are ahead of you on the path to recovery? It really does hope to feed off of the experiences, strength and hope of others while you build up your own supply, and also pick up hints and tips for healthy sobriety, have a chance to offload worries and concerns or irritants without worrying friends and family who don't realky 'get it' anyway, and to remind yourself exactly why sobriety IS the better option.

Making a recovery plan would also be a great step in the right direction ...
http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...y-plans-1.html

As would reading around on here and familiarizing yourself with information and preparing yourself so you can better avoid potential pitfalls that may be lurking.

It's easy to be so focussed on the physical aspect of getting sober and healing that we trip up on the emotional and psychological issues that it throws at us.

Maybe not the E.R. .....but..in my opinion...you should make a doctor appt. about your addiction and cravings. Maybe look into an I.O.P. program. (Intensive Out Patient)....it meets like 3 days a week in the morning or afternoon depending on where you go and it deals with these exact things you are going through....its THERAPY.... helps me BIGTIME !!!

Hi bringmeback

Lots of good advice here already

You could do worse to join this community and post here regularly - especially if you're not suffering right now...thats a great time to start work

Recovery needs constant work for a while -We need to say no whenever we crave , whenever we feel uncomfortable feelings we want not to feel, or when we get that invite out that we know will end in a prolonged drinking session.

it's a little short term pain for long term gain - but you won't be alone, you'll find support here

why not join our Class of December support thread? Its for anyone wanting to quit this month and all you have to do to join is post in the thread

A doctor, particularly an addiction specialist, can help you. Although you might not be in withdrawal right now, you may well have an underlyng mental health issue and suggest treatment for the physical symptoms of your drinking. They can also suggest a treatment plan and provide any necessary referrals. If you dont have insurance you should be able to find someone to help to get the ball rolling. Or you may still be on.your parent's insurance.

You have admitted that you have a problem and have reached out here for help. Its a start. Please listen here and get more help as needed. AA was very helpful for me in early sobriety bit it was in.the context of inpatient rehab. Use whatever youve got. Its extremely unlikely that you can solve this problem alone.
