Third Time is a Charm?

I failed miserably ... I'm regretful and ashamed. Such a dumb move on my part. Ugh. And now I'm back to day one; heading into work with less than three hours of sleep and a massive headache due to dehydration due to wine consumption, which is due to my own damned stupidity.

Day One.

You left out the part about having learned a valuable lesson.

You didn't achieve a goal you had set out to achieve. Feeling disappointment is expected, but only your AV can turn it into you being a stupid, horrible person. That way it becomes a task that can never be achieved, because stupid horrible people don't have the power to achieve these things.

You are not stupid or horrible. Just a human like the rest of us.

The task is still there. What did you learn that will help you achieve it?

Drink water.
Reset.
Achieve.
You can do this.

What did I learn?

I learned that I cannot survive if I drink. I learned I can either have a happy marriage and life OR I can have alcohol but not both.

I know I want to stay sober. For me, for my health, for my sanity, for my family.

As for having a plan? I'm not sure. My plans seem to have failed in the past. I'm going to avoid alcohol. I am not going to drink today. That's my only plan so far.

What do you think you can do differently the next time you want to have a drink? How did this drink turn up in your hand?

There will be a next time. What are you going to say to yourself when that thought comes in your head?

You have to stop that thought from going further. A thought of drinking can and must have a counterpoint. What is that, for you?

I've tried "not drinking" as a plan many times, but it hasn't worked on its own yet. I like the idea of focusing on building a sober life that's so great that drinking would ruin it.

Hopefully it will be but if it isn't don't ever give up trying. Eventually you'll get it and quit for good.

It took me like 15 relapses until I finally reached 7-years sober... Now I am back to trying to quit again and I probably have relapsed 9-times already but I'll never stop trying to quit.

I'm a soldier and I'll keep fighting.. You should too. Don't ever give up trying to quit.

I have had a my share of a "slips" ...

The thing that really helps now BEFORE making the mistake ///

"Play the tape forward" ...

Once I play it... The ugly, regretful, sickening, wasteful feelings and thoughts enter my head... then I shake myself and feel the "thrill inside" that I did not drink!

It gets better. Keep at it !!

Thanks for the support everyone. Lots to think about in the coming days/weeks/months/years.

I put the drink in my hand. I walked up and poured a big ol' glass of wine. No one made me do it. No one put the wine in front of me. Just me.

Yup. There needs to be a detour taken between the thought and the glass.

Catch it next time. Sit with it till it passes. Come here and read and post.

I did the same thing Ezra....willingly made the choice to drink, leading to 5 miserable days of relapse. The support I got here on SR pulled me out of the pit; on day 4 now. Its great you made it back.
Support to you.
