Looking at alcoholism from the other side makes me grateful

On Day 4 now

I have an alcoholic friend. I've known him since childhood. Last night, I was speaking to him on the phone. He was going out - wanted me to join him but I opted against it. I know this guy inside out and I told him to only withdraw the money he budgeted for booze and the taxi home.

The reason I told him that is because I know him. He's a really generous person and when he's had a few drinks, he'll buy you an entire round of drinks. Even if you've just met him, he'll take care of you. He didn't listen to me - he took his bank card.

He called me this morning at 8.00AM. The entire bonus he received from work was completely gone. He spent a ludicrous amount of money last night. He's devastated - he had budgeted that money to use during the holidays and it's completely gone and it's not even Christmas Day.

I felt really sorry for him but I also felt grateful - reinforced my sobriety.

Onwards to Day 5.

I don't think he's at that stage where he realises he's an alcoholic. He just sees himself as a young bachelor having fun - he looks at it as a phase, as I once did.
