Unholy Trinity

Booze*, cigarettes, internet.

Like that “other” trinity, they work best when working together.

One works to unify the soul, the other to destroy it.

It’s amazing how I could spend countless hours, days,
letting my soul bleed out, my life dwindle to nothingness
while engaged in the unholy one.

Having JUST (thank you SR & AVRT) broken the first chain,
my eyes are now set on the second, and hopefully soon the third,
that demonic slot-machine of the occasional dopamine reward
that CAN be used as the wonderful tool for learning that it is,
but can also be used to replace our actual lives with...nothingness.

So true! How much of 'real life' we waste on pointless things. It wasn't until I got sober that I realized how vast the outside world really is. It's like I was wearing blinders around all day, everyday. I was talking to a good friend of mine yesterday about this(he's helped me a lot in getting/staying sober). He's a 'normie', has young kids and a wife. He said that if it wasn't for his structure in life; he thinks he would 'lose control' like I did. I haven't had any 'structure' in my life for several years(besides my work) and just slipped off the planet for a while..glad to be back!

I think that as with drink/drugs, the internet was exhilarating at first.

Then comes the mindless/thoughtless/pleasure-less/repetitive compulsion

until you lose complete sight of real life.

I still wouldn't go back to pre-internet days, given the choice.

The internet is similar to sugar for me. I like it, I'm not going to ever give it up - so I have to learn to manage it. It's an exercise in moderation.

Can I spend all day in forums? Yes, but these days they are forums that help me in some way and I'm grateful for them.

I quit facebook years ago. Never got into Pinterest or twitter or Instagram or any other social sites other than fitness. I also quit the mindless forums that focus on the minutiae of activities I participate in. There is plenty of good info if I need it, but I don't have to read every single post.

Just like there are lots of sugary foods, I have to be selective and not just say, "Yes!" to every one of the cookies in the world. No cookie/internet pun intended.
