Potlucks are dangerous

Went to one last night. WOnderful looking little dark chocolate balls rolled in chocolate sprinkles. I was so looking forward to having one. One bite and I tasted booze. I think it was rum.
I had no frigin idea. Caught me totally by surprise!
I gave the rest of it to my spouse.

I wish people would label things. Thank goodness it didn’t trigger anything.

I really dislike the taste of liquor and can't imagine it enhancing the taste of food.

Glad you weren't triggered too!

Also holiday season coming, must be careful. We learn with time to keep an eye out.

A nice sober day wished for all,

The taste of liquor in candy is repulsive.

So sorry that happened to you, puppy.

A fruit salad caught me by surprise recently.

Drinking or not, I've always loathed the taste of rum in baked items.

One vice I don't need to worry about.

Unfortunately, few normies would think to put a "Warning. Contains Alcohol" on a pot-luck item.

It tends to be dessert like items usually right? No sense in adding booze into hot dogs or coleslaw. Stick to that or buy your own seeets if that’s your thing.

Thank you for this thread--I'm willing to bet there are a LOT of folks who would never consider the need to alert folks about foods w/alcohol content. It's really kind of crazy, when you think about it. Everything else in the world has to be labeled for any potential allergen it might contain--think of the labels "made in a facility that also processes tree nuts", "contains gluten/peanuts/soy/dairy" and so on.

I wonder if the host/hostess of the potluck could somehow communicate to any potential attendees, asking that they label foods containing dairy, animal products (for the vegans/vegetarians in the crowd), gluten, nuts, AND ALCOHOL, just including it along with all the other things that people might potentially want to avoid b/c of physical or ethical considerations?

My sister uses wine when she makes mushrooms to put on steak. I have a bread pudding recipe that uses a sauce containing bourbon. My brother brought me a gift of dark chocolate truffles made w/red wine. It really is everywhere.

Again, thanks for the thread, and I will do what I can in my little circle to make sure no one gets an unpleasant (and possibly sobriety-threatening) alcoholic surprise at their get-together.
