Potlucks are dangerous
Potlucks are dangerous
Went to one last night. WOnderful looking little dark chocolate balls rolled in chocolate sprinkles. I was so looking forward to having one. One bite and I tasted booze. I think it was rum.
I had no frigin idea. Caught me totally by surprise!
I gave the rest of it to my spouse.
I wish people would label things. Thank goodness it didn’t trigger anything.

Drinking or not, I've always loathed the taste of rum in baked items.
One vice I don't need to worry about.
Unfortunately, few normies would think to put a "Warning. Contains Alcohol" on a pot-luck item.

Thank you for this thread--I'm willing to bet there are a LOT of folks who would never consider the need to alert folks about foods w/alcohol content. It's really kind of crazy, when you think about it. Everything else in the world has to be labeled for any potential allergen it might contain--think of the labels "made in a facility that also processes tree nuts", "contains gluten/peanuts/soy/dairy" and so on.
I wonder if the host/hostess of the potluck could somehow communicate to any potential attendees, asking that they label foods containing dairy, animal products (for the vegans/vegetarians in the crowd), gluten, nuts, AND ALCOHOL, just including it along with all the other things that people might potentially want to avoid b/c of physical or ethical considerations?
My sister uses wine when she makes mushrooms to put on steak. I have a bread pudding recipe that uses a sauce containing bourbon. My brother brought me a gift of dark chocolate truffles made w/red wine. It really is everywhere.
Again, thanks for the thread, and I will do what I can in my little circle to make sure no one gets an unpleasant (and possibly sobriety-threatening) alcoholic surprise at their get-together.
