40th birthday present to myself
I'm 83 days sober today.
I never in a million years thought that even two days straight without alcohol would be possible for me. However, here I am at 83 days on the Yucatán peninsula with my husband celebrating my 40th birthday sans booze.
I had so many 'excuses' this week to drink. And that's exactly what they were, excuses.
Before flying into Mexico I spent four days in Las Vegas covering the aftermath of the horrific mass shooting (I'm a broadcast journalist).
So many times I thought to myself, "just one drink to deal with this" "you've earned it" etc.... But I didn't - NOT even at a group dinner with my colleagues!! (they drink a lot)
I just can't believe how strong I've been - it's surreal.
However, today at brunch, at a little Mexican restaurant, I almost caved - thinking to myself "it's hot, one Corona won't "count" since it's not Grey Goose etc....."
So I ordered one.
I immediately felt sick about it and quickly changed my order to a bottled water.
I've learned that juat that "one" DOES count. It was also not worth the risk it possibly leading back to the vodka bottle.
Thanks for reading :-)

I just turned 40 too, and have kept my longest sobriety streak in a while. Great that you could hit up a drinking spot sober! I don't mind going to bars and restaurants etc. when I'm sober; it reinforces my strength if that makes sense...

AWESOME!!! Some great decisions all around in the past days and week - proud of and for you.
I too turned 40 sober last year- first birthday I can recall in quite a few years that I can say that. This year, turning 41 sober was a bit more important- when I finally quit, it was after a liver dr gave me a year, 18 mo to live and I was within a few days of that 18 months.
Keep going- knowing you will be in situations with your coworkers in a high-stress environment these days is a great tool. Avoiding that first one is indeed critical!!

Happy Birthday and congrats on 83 days.
I quit a few days before my 40th & I have 111 days today. It feels so good to be able to say I haven't touched a drop in my 40s.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation.
