Marriage and alcohol

Being married is to an alcoholic is like dealing with an approaching wildfire - you leave early or stay and defend. If you stay and defend alcohol is a frenzied ember attack.

I too often thing about addiction as a natural disaster. Usually a tsunami. It helps me think that it is nothing personal just a force of nature. You can get out of the way or not.

I agree with bekind, we can take our power back. We can change and are worthy of an amazing life. We just need to do the work!!

Good descriptions. We either are healthy enough to see it and quickly move out of its way or we are unhealthy and get sucked in and pulled under.

Alcoholism is like a natural disaster. It isn't personal and will destroy anyone who doesn't get out of its path.

I see now, it is my job to recognise it and move aside.

That's a really good metaphor. Yes, its overwhelming destructive power and everyone else's complete helplessness to stop it makes alcoholism very much like a natural disaster.

Alcoholism has been traumatic for both my husband and I in our marriage. I didn't realize for a long time how much of the storm I was a part of, even without ever picking up a drink.

I'm so thankful for leaving, taking care of myself, for finding my healing space.
