(Re)Learning To Fly
(Re)Learning To Fly
There's a raptor rehabilitation center not far from where I live. Volunteers can frequently be seen helping the birds -- hawks, owls, eagles and more -- get closer to freedom after injury or whatever other reason brought them to the center. The birds are tethered to the volunteers, who launch them into practice flights that ready them for the day when they can fly on their own. They're beautiful; their wingspans are breathtaking.
For a recovering alcoholic, the metaphors are pretty inescapable.
When you're at the beginning of recovery, it's hard to imagine that you'll fly again. You can't really envision anything beyond the wobbly, tentative stage you're in. You have to relearn it. As time goes by, you're launched. And the idea that you can soar -- a verb that once seemed to have been stricken from your vocabulary -- isn't so impossible anymore.
Today is my four-year sober anniversary.
I'm not the same person I was a year ago. A year from now, I won't be the same person.
I'm grateful to be growing again. I'm grateful for so very much.
Thank you, SR.

What a beautiful post, Venecia - you really have a way with words... not that it's first time I've noticed it today I love your methaphor about the volunteers helping injured birds to fly, very appropriate in many ways - how we support each-other at different stages or recovery and life, here, and via all kinds of important connections. Re-learn almost forgotten good things in life and discover entirely new possibilities.
Congratulations on four years of sobriety and continuing evolution!

Happy birthday, sweet friend. I've gained so much from your presence on this board. Thank you so much for being here & for strengthening my commitment to sobriety. It's an honor to be on this journey with you. May you continue to soar!

Thank you so much.
Allocating my time, including that spent online, has meant I'm not posting here as much these days. But my heart is here. So grateful for the good wishes from friends.
