Weird withdrawal symptoms

I went the crazy way of going sober and just tried from home and it worked and I'm reaching 2 weeks sober. Just a couple of weeks ago, for God only knows how long, I was drinking a fifth a day. I dropped it down to a pint, then I tapered off for two hellish days with just a couple of beers when I started feeling nauseous. My sheets were covered in sweat, I was SUPER jumpy, and I'd randomly gag. I started off with just eating fruits I liked because my body couldn't really handle anything else. For the first few days I'd lay in bed sober and it's like I could hear distant music, anyone ever experienced that? When I first was starting to get sober, as soon as I was about to fall asleep my body would twitch super hard and I'd jump up in a panic. It was so annoying, I still get that as well.

Withdrawal from alcohol can be deadly and you should see a doctor if you were drinking a fifth a day. There are numerous sources of information about this but here is just one excerpt from WebMD:

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur in people who have been drinking heavily for weeks, months, or years and then either stop or significantly reduce their alcohol consumption.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can begin as early as two hours after the last drink, persist for weeks, and range from mild anxiety and shakiness to severe complications, such as seizures and delirium tremens (also called DTs). The death rate from DTs -- which are characterized by confusion, rapid heartbeat, and fever -- is estimated to range from 1% to 5%.

Because alcohol withdrawal symptoms can rapidly worsen, it's important to seek medical attention even if symptoms are seemingly mild. Appropriate alcohol withdrawal treatments can reduce the risk of developing withdrawal seizures or DTs.

It's especially important to see a doctor if you've experienced previous alcohol withdrawal episodes or if you have other health conditions such as infections, heart disease, lung disease, or a history of seizures.

Severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms are a medical emergency. If seizures, fever, severe confusion, hallucinations, or irregular heartbeats occur, either take the patient to an emergency room or call 911.

Yeah I saw my doctor after I got sober and we did a bunch of liver/health scans and everything came back normal thank God. He didn't really have a good explanation as to why I twitch that hard though, he said jerking as you fall asleep is common, but now since my nervous system and muscles are catching up to life without booze it's mostly what's exacerbating the issue. I might just have to go to a sleep specialist if it doesn't get better.

I had that jolting awake feeling when I was a kid sometimes, so I don't know. It could have something to do with your nervous system adjusting to falling asleep without a sedative. I had it in withdrawals in the past, it went away, I don't have it now.. I had auditory and visual hallucinations when I would withdrawal from hard liquor..

I understand that detoxing gets harder and the symptoms more extreme the more we relapse.

Sounds like possibly mild DT's and I myself had similar, but worse after one of the worst benders I ever went on. Pouring sweat, couldn't sleep, throwing up like crazy, couldn't even keep water down. Shakes so bad I had to hold a glass of water with two hands, Even the slightest sounds sounded like they were blaring,.. I can truly say it was one of the, if not the most horrific experience of my life.
Alcohol withdrawal is no joke. You can look up kindling as they only get worse if you drink again. You likely could end up in the hospital or worse.

Congrats on 2 weeks.
I had identical symptoms to you.
Only this last time did I have auditory hallucinations. Very scary.
It DOES get worse each time I withdrawl. Precisely why I do not want to do that again.
I would gag at the thought of alcohol...how's that for a message? Driving to the liquor store...gagging.
I'd also actually vomit from over consumption and certainly upon rising.
I was, at the end, drinking 1-2 pints of the cheapest vodka on Earth.
Long gone were the days of Chopin and cranberry in the good crystal...I didn't mix drinks, I didn't chase drinks, I didn't even use a glass. Very sick and sad.
Glad to be at day 15...(so we have roughly the same quit date 👍👍👍 ) my memory is still pretty bad but I can sleep, eat...not sweating @ night, anxiety is MUCH better. Skin is not so red/swollen/broken out.
Just so grateful.
GL,
Jules

I've experienced some of the things you speak of, particularly the jerking awake right before you fall asleep. This usually occurs when I can finally sleep, but keep getting jerked awake. There is a medical name for this, I just don't remember what it is. The auditory stuff I've heard happens, I've been fortunate to avoid that. Good job on getting sober because a fifth a day is pretty healthy habit.

Hi GoGreen. Most of that happened to me, too. I didn't hear music, but loud humming. I went through every kind of emotion. Everything settled down, though. The early days are rough - but once they're over you never have to return to that misery.

My withdrawals were similar....I had all that over and over for years.

I still deal with issues I feel getting better at 25 months clean.

Some of m us dug a hole very deep that we will never be out.

I am not convinced that many folks that think they moderate well are addicted. This addiction will finally manifest as some illness in their golden years. The doctors will offer medication and the circle will close.

We here are very lucky to have this knowledge at reletivily young ages.

Tha n ks.

I had the same symptoms when I quit drinking. Thought they would never go away, but they did. I just use it as motivation to not drink again.
