Artistic expressions ....

Most of us have some type of artistic talent or skill. I enjoy many different artistic expressions and skills. I have some music instrument and singing skills that I have developed over the years, and I wish I was a better painter. Specifically watercolor.

Other skills I admire is speaking different languages, poems and short story writings, and baking!

What are your artistic skills or expressions look like??
I'd be a starving artist, but I enjoy expressing my creative side.

I love to write and while I was still drinking, I was cut off from my writer's soul. I didn't think I would ever get it back, but I did!

I also have a passion for scrapbooking and card making.

I love pictures and scrapbooking is a way for me to express my creativity and relive wonderful memories (or spend time with loved ones already passed ) at the same time.

Simply,

This guy on YouTube shows his artistic progress over a 4 year period.

From 2012 to 2016 or something...it is dramatic.

From line drawings of faces.....that a 12 year old would be proud of....

To realistic picture like faces...aka Michelangelo.

Amazing!

Thanks.

Poetry/fiction (widely published), music and poetry videos (widely viewed).

As this *is* SR and we are speaking of the arts, I will say that alcohol has def. played a part in my writing at differing times in my life (not so much music, but sometimes even there).

I'd by lying if I didn't say alcohol fueled some of my better work.

It works like pouring gasoline on an open fire when you have a large wood pile going.

And it flames brightly until your entire "woodpile" is gone and you're left in the dark.

It works by connecting differing aspects of your brain, like pouring water onto a circuit board. That which was not connected now suddenly is.

But it will also, rather quickly, destroy the entire board.

It's a double-edged sword that eventually becomes a single-edged sword, destroying at both insert and withdrawal.

I did this one-off representation of the characters in my D&D party a couple of years ago. On my tablet, streamed to the telly lol.

Guy on the left was (at the time) an 8th level Lawful Good Human Samurai, whom the DM also permitted to be a Paladin. Go figure! Horned figure in the middle was my character, a 6th/6th level Chaotic Good Minotaur Fighter/Mage (called Bungus Trueheart). To the right of him was another Japanese influenced character (WTF??? - guess I'm getting old, but everybody wants to be a Japan character now), a Lawful Neutral Human Male Fighter (Bushi kit) 7th level. The small robed guy at the bottom was a Neutral Good 6th/5th Svirfneblin Male Cleric/Illusionist - a wee trickster called Sturmweed Bunglefoot. A force to be reckoned with.

I am fairly right-brained, but left-brained when I have to be....but I am more naturally a right-brained person. Artistic stuff and language has always come fairly easy to me. I was good in French when I took it in school, though I've forgotten a lot of it. I think perhaps there is a misconception out there that drugs and alcohol enhances the flow of art. If it does, though, it's a temporary thing and as we know it can eventually rob a person of so much.

In one of the guitar workshops I took there was time for questions and one of the students asked the teacher. "Do you use any kind of substance to enhance your playing?" The teacher was a bit taken aback by that question and said "No, I don't. I really don't. I don't need it and if anything that would interfere with my playing. You don't need to use drugs and alcohol to be able to play well." I know there are a lot of musicians who do imbibe...but there are also many musicians in recovery too and they continue to play and perform well. Sammy Shelor, a reknowned, stellar banjo picker, for one.

I feel fairly strongly that creative outlets are good therapy.

I can't figure out how to get the picture to attach so if you look on my user page you will see some paintings. Nothing grand, but they are mine.

Writer Sherman Alexie on alcohol:

Question: Does alcohol primarily help or hurt writers?

Sherman Alexie: Well, I wrote "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven"
and "The Business of Fancy Dancing" while drunk and drinking.

So there's certainly a lot to be said for my desperate years, my alcoholic years,
my active alcoholic years as being the source of some pretty good work,
for being the source of the two books that established and made my career.

But the thing is, it's unsustainable. You know, if you are using substances to fuel
your creativity, you're going to have a very, very short artistic life.

You're going to be a sprinter and by and large, I wanted to become a marathon runner.
And I can only run the marathon if I'm sober.

You kill your brain. You kill your brain.

You know, please try to find me, the successful drug user.

You know, try to find me, the high-functioning alcoholic, you know, career person,
and you could probably find in their work when they were drinking, when they weren't.
I bet you could look at the downfall of some amazing writers who wrote one or two great
books and then just fell apart, I'm pretty sure that's related to alcohol consumption.

So, it's unsustainable, you know, it's sort of like the environment, you can only pour so much
pollutants into it before the temperature changes dramatically.

I'm not talented at all, but I play any instrument I can get my hands on, mix / produce, delve into sound design, do graphic design (got halfway to my AA degree before drinking intervened, and I need to complete it yesterday), do video editing, and I even enjoy trying to wrap my head around game programming or other means of visual programming (Audiomulch and Reaktor patching, for any of the other nerds here - basic ****, but it's a lot of fun).

Thankfully, I get to use the most basic forms of these skills in my work, so it's not all a wasted pursuit.

Art is the only thing that makes sobriety bearable, especially if you have time on your hands (everybody technically does, but art is a much better pastime than TV IMHO). I don't know what the hell I'd do without it.

It's not art but I love riding my unicycle. You can't worry about too much else when balancing on one wheel.
