Docs appointment

I've made an appointment for this afternoon figured I need to request some help.

Unfortunately I have been drinking the past few nights, it can't continue.

I've struggled with alcohol and over last couple of years binging on junk food

How do I start the conversation with the Gp, what do I say?

That's great news! Just be honest, I think? You have to start the process.

Have you spoken to your GP about the specific problem you are faced with now before, if you don't mind me asking? Practically, the doctor won't be able to formulate a sensible plan unless they know everything.

For me it was daunting to have to open up to my doctor about the truth, but that is surely what you have to do? There really is no point in trying to downplay your problems (your addiction would love that, of course!) For me. once it was done, the feelings of relief were palpable.

From my own experience, lying to the doctor is a mug's game. I did it for years to protect my "right to drink." [Not suggesting you would be so stupid!]

Just be honest with them and don't sugar coat how much you are drinking and that you have a problem. Docs are there to help and should give you some plans of action.

So glad to hear that you have made the appointment with your GP, Stewy.

As the others have mentioned, total honesty and full disclosure are essential - with regard to your drinking habits (past and present, amount and frequency of drinking), your diet and your emotional situation. A true partnership with your doctor regarding your health and well-being should be your goal.

Let us know how it goes. We are here for you, Stewy.

Maybe write it down. That way if you get there and can't say it you can hand them the piece of paper. Many of us struggle to be honest and face the fear of judgement or rejection. But that fear comes from our addictive voice and is just another thing that keeps us drinking, and willing to accept the lie that there is no hope for us.

I hope you manage to be more honest than I did.

Wishing you all the best for your sobriety and recovery. BB

Just tell your Dr. the truth.

Trying to think of ways to sugarcoat it and portray yourself in a better light is a waste of energy.

Don't worry, your Dr. has heard it before.

Good call Stewy, glad you going to seek some help from your doc.

As far as how you start the conversation, just tell them the truth. You have a serious drinking/addiction problem and also anxiety issues so just tell them that. They will know what questions to ask from there. They are there to help you, so you have to tell them what you need help with and there is no sense beating around the bush. If you had a broken arm you'd say that you think you have a broken arm, right?

Don't worry about feeling ashamed or embarrassed, they have heard this story many, many times. I told it to my doctor the same thing and was treated with respect and compassion.

The truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth Stewy - otherwise how can they really help?

They need to know the full story.

I'm really glad you're going. I know you don't feel like it - but it's the best move to make at this point.

He said it's good I have insight into the problem

Apparently I can make a self referral for CBT which I'll do

He said my anti depressants won't be effective whilst I'm drinking

I'm still stuck in the cycle after drinking last night, it's true, alcohol does not "solve" anything

It's no use lying to your doctor. One look at your blood work results and they can tell everything about you but your favorite color.

Why did you drink last night? Evidently there
must still be alcohol in your home or you went
out to get some? You drank after you went to
the doctor?

Even tho the doctor told you that your
depression meds wont be effective if you
drink, you still drank?

That's crazy insanity.

I think it's best I try find a local meeting for people with addiction problems

It feels worse starting drinking again when I stopped for so long

I don't remember when I was last happy in myself

I'm exhausted already with all the beer consumption

It's scary how it's seeped back in to my daily routines

Actions the key Stewy.
Don't think, act.

Too much thinking will often simply manifest itself as more drinking.

Find a local group today and go to the next available meeting.
