starting meds tomorrow
This is my first post and would just like to say Hi to everyone! Today I probably done the hardest thing possible and made that visit to my doctor because I know now I have had enough and really do need help. I have been drinking alot for about 5 years now and I have come to the stage where I hate what I am doing, I dont enjoy it and it has recently made me feel really ill. It is now having too much effect on my life and I just want out now!! I had a talk to my doctor today, was totally honest about everything with him . He prescribed a 10 day course of tablets I have to take to help with withdrawal etc.... I have done some research on the medication he prescribed and the reviews where all positive, alot of people saying how much it helped them in the early days of withdrawal. The tablets are called Chlordiazepoxide, I dont know if anyone here has any experience with this medication but if so I would appreciate any feedback. So tomorrow, hopefully is my new beginning!! X

It's in the same class as diazepam or benzoes so the usual warnings apply. Perticularly it is habit forming if use is prolonged so once done with the script you have to have a plan in place to continue with sobriety. Don't take the calming effect of drugs for granted. When you're over the withdrawals with a drug to help you have to cope without it.
For that you have come to the right place.

Welcome to the forum. You did make the right choice speaking with your doc about it. Those meds will get you through the initial withdrawal, but it's just the first step. During that time I would use to put together what your solid sobriety plan is to stay clean be it AA, addiction therapy, smart, rational recovery, etc,.

Hi Shala12, Welcome!
I was prescribed Librium back in June after going to the ER because my withdrawals had gotten so bad. It worked very well for me, I felt so much better and kept me calm enough to get through the first couple of weeks. I won't say there were not side effects; I don't remember much of those 2 weeks as it does affect your memory. I also got frustrated with loss of balance. I had 21 days worth but stopped taking them after a 14 days. It was truly a life saver for me.

I was detoxed with Ativan personally, but a friend of mine just finished up a 21 day tapered detox with Librium. He was a 2-4 bottle of cheap fortified wine a day drinker with crippling physical withdrawals and was homeless because of his alcohol consumption. He is now 26 days sober. He stayed with a friend of ours who is Psych ER/trauma specialist, so she was able to keep an eye on him and make sure that his detox was safe. He said that the first few days were shaky, because of the combo of malnutrition, the withdrawal symptoms that broke through the taper medications, and the effects of the higher dose of the Librium for the first few days. But, after five days, he was healthy enough to go out and find a job and about a week later he was able to find a room to rent. So all in all, his experience with it was what kept him alive.
