Day 3. Barely hanging in there

After swearing I never wanted to drink again just days ago. Here I am with cravings and a cold bottle of wine in the fridge. It's a public holiday today and my husband is already sitting in the pool drinking beer. I know I can't drink as I've still got about 8mg of Valium in my system. I'm going to try distract myself by cooking sonething

First off, check your HALT triggers. Hungry-Angry-Lonely-Tired. All of these are likely to rattle us, certainly in early sobriety, but even later on if there are two or more present.

Have you considered trying some meetings?

And why is there wine in the fridge?? Dump that stuff out. Have you been completely honest with your husband about how you feel about your drinking as yet? If not, perhaps now would be a good time. Maybe he won't support you, but you won't know til you give him the opportunity to do so.

Wishing you all the best for your sobriety and recovery. BB

Pour it out. Or drive somewhere and give it away. Anything, but get it out of your fridge and temptations way.

Eventually you'll be able to be around alcohol without having to fight the urge to drink it, but not yet. It's just a slip waiting to happen there.

Did you talk to your husband.

Take the wine and box it up and bury it out in the backyard. 50 years from now go and dig it up and put it up for auction to help a good cause.

thanks SoberNun - I just wondered

Definitely talk to your husband.Express your desire to be sober, and let him know how important that is to you.

You don't need bottles of wine being bought for you,

D

Hi Sobernun.Yes,pour that bottle of wine away down your kitchen sink.Doing that will serve a good purpose,to sanitise the waste pipes! This is just about the only use alcohol has.And do have an honest conversation with your husband too.I remember when I was 3 months into my sober journey and visiting family had left behind wine in my fridge.I didn't hesitate to pour it away.Take care sobernun, keep posting too

If you have taking valium- be careful not to do anything unsafe- like driving. Pout it out- every time you want to drink- post here.

I will be day three tomorrow SoberNunn, you can do it x Public holiday here too, are you in Perth? Maybe pour a nice cold icy water or non alcoholic drink and join him in the pool?

I love recognising the HALT triggers.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Opened the wine. Took a few sips. Panicked. Poured it down the sink. Does this mean I should count tomorrow as day 1 again?

I would, but it's your sobriety. Your call.

The most important thing is that you learn from this so that you can make your sobriety stronger for the next attempt. So...

What went wrong?
What could have stopped that happening?
What did you learn?
What can you change for next time?

And well done for slinging the rest of it down the sink. Phew!

Amazing Job pouring the booze down the drain. That shows such will power and strength. No way I could have ever done that.

Keep coming back and posting.

SoberNunn I am on day three as well and I think having a bottle of wine in the fridge would have caused me to slip up too! Well done for being able to throw the rest away. I hope the cooking helps. I've started exercising again - went for a long run today and that helped curb some cravings although now it's evening again they have returned, agh.

Good luck for another sober day tomorrow
