Tapering

Tapering, yes the dreaded word lol

I am currently trying to get off this crazy roundabout and as i have expressed in my recent posts my doctors are just awful when it comes to prescribing meds. Has anyone here ever actually tapered with real success? I have cut down from 12 pints to 6 pints a night, i just dont wanna go through that cold turkey again!

I have all the information and support ( mainly from you guys and i DO appreciate it ) on how to stay sober but i just need to get past the initial detox!

I have started my green juicing again and trying to think positive etc

Dee thank you for the recovery programmes you sent me mate it is much appreciated!

So yeah basically, any experience/opinions on tapering? Sorry guys i just feel proper bummed out and wanna come off without risking myself!

Yeah when i went to the E.R a year or 2 back he said ' cut down it's a long process '

And my local dr just said ' nobody has ever died from quitting drinking ' I had my father with me at the time who was a witness to that!

Chill,
I'm sorry but my personal experience will not be an answer you like. I tried to taper many times and would always fail. In the end I quit cold turkey. It's the only way it worked for me.

If I ever have to do it again, which I hope I never do, I would go to some type of medically supervised rehab.

Rehab on the NHS is hard to come by, im thinking maybe just bite the bullet and go for it!

Last time was cold turkey and horrid BUT i survived it!!

i just dont wanna go through that cold turkey again!

well, at some point you will HAVE to go from DRINKING to NOT drinking, and there may be some discomfort!!!

i'm sorry you are aren't getting much helpful guidance from your dr. but six pints a night is still a lot of booze. you're going to have to find a lot of discipline, bite the bullet and take a more aggressive position and accept that it won't be a picnic.

good luck.

Chilledice, I'm sorry you are not getting good advice and support from your doctor. As others have said, tapering sure did not work for me. And, stopping altogether was far easier than my attempts at tapering. I hope you find a way to make this work.

The main aim of any tapering plan is to get down to zero.
I hope you can work out a schedule that works for you.

If you think you need instruction I'd go back to your Dr or get a second opinion?

I didn't have meds and I got through ok - it was rough but really no rougher than being drunk 24/7.

I was thinking more of some guidance with tapering Chilled.

Seems irresponsible to throw the idea out there with no guidelines, but I'm no Dr .

Like how to actually taper safely....targets for each day etc.

Sorry I didn't realise you were drinking right now. Sorry if I got too wordy or complex.

'There is man who wants to stop smoking tobacco. He hears of Guru in India who might be able to help. He goes there seeks to speak to Guru and is granted an audience. He tells of all the doctors he has been to. Specialist clinics in Switzerland and so on. Guru listens paiently to his stories. When he is finished and asks Guru to help Guru says "there is only one way to stop smoking tobacco and that is to stop smoking tobacco." '

I like that story. It goes nicely with the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle.

the problem isn't stopping smoking. The problem is how to deal with life as it is as a non smoker.

For that : SR and all the various resources found here.

If you have managed to reduce to that amount ok perhaps you are mostly facing a mind detox.?

I have tapered successfully, because I had to. I was deep into a bender and had a business to run. It requires discipline and you will still have periods of discomfort. I also made sure to eat. Took me 2 days.
